Daily Deal: New flights, cheap fares between L.A. and Scandinavia

Norwegian Air Shuttle might be one of the cheapest airlines you’ve never heard of. The budget airline is dipping into the U.S. market next year with nonstop transatlantic service from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Orlando, Fla., to Scandinavian cities. Fares from Los Angeles went on sale Tuesday starting at $237 each way.

The deal: Norwegian, as the airline markets itself, will fly 787 Dreamliners:
--between Los Angeles and Stockholm twice a week starting March 2;
--between Los Angeles and Copenhagen twice a week starting March 1; and
--between Los Angeles and Oslo once a week starting June 1.

Norwegian made the biggest aircraft order in Europe last year, buying 222 planes from Boeing and Airbus, according to Reuters. But beware: Like many budget airlines, fees for baggage, seat selection, etc., can run up the cost of a ticket.

When: There’s no deadline listed for this sale, but it’s based on availability of low-fare seats.

Tested: I went online and found a ticket for Los Angeles-Stockholm flights on March 4 (outbound) and March 12 (return) that cost $548 round-trip, including tax and surcharges (the return flight was higher than the lowest sale price).

I could, for an additional $89 each way, add breakfast and dinner, seat reservation and one checked bag. If not, it would cost $46 per checked bag (only carry-on is free). Note too that fares increase during the summer months.
