WASHINGTON
Old-time flavor
At Olympic National Park this past summer, we stayed at Kalaloch Lodge inside the park. We heated our room with a wood stove. It was like stepping back in time.
Kalaloch Lodge, 157151 U.S. 101, Forks 98331; (866) 525-2562, www.visitkalaloch.com. Cabins for two from $119.

PANAMA
Police escort
One of the best experiences a traveler will have in Panama City is a personal tour at the ruins of Panama Viejo, or old town, by one of the uniformed Tourist Police (Policia de Turismo), usually outfitted in black shorts and a tan polo shirt. It’s only offered if an officer has the time. There is no charge, but tips are welcome.
