Readers recommend: Be ready to pay in Germany and Austria

We just returned from a trip to Germany and Austria. Here’s a warning: Not one shop we went into took credit cards. Cash only. And the banks in the smaller towns would not cash a $100 bill. When we cashed American Express traveler’s checks, the bank took 11% (ouch).
