Hotel Lanai: 828 Lanai Ave., Lanai City; (800) 795-7211, www.hotellanai.com. Old Hawaii charm in plantation-style establishment dating from 1923. Standard rooms and baths are small, rustic. From $139 to $209.
WHERE TO EAT
Both Four Seasons resorts offer multiple options, from island formal to casual, and there is a restaurant at the Hotel Lanai.
Pele’s Other Garden: 811 Houston St., (808) 565-9628. www.pelesothergarden.com. Funky cafe where the décor consists largely of license plates. Good pasta, pizza, salads, sandwiches. Lunch and dinner. Main dishes at dinner, $18 to $20.
Blue Ginger Cafe: 409 7th Ave., (808) 565-6363. Longtime local breakfast hangout, also serves lunch and early dinner. Salads, burgers, curry, saimin. Oilcloth-covered tables and ceiling fans. Inexpensive: $3.50 to $15.95.
