Washington Monument to reopen May 12

The Washington Monument is almost back. The National Park Service announced this week that the remaining scaffolding surrounding the monument is beginning to come down. Reopening is set for May 12 after a 32-month closure due to damage from an earthquake.
The reopening will be marked by a ceremony at 10 a.m. that day. Details on the day’s events have not yet been released.
“We are delighted to be in the homestretch with the repairs to the Washington Monument almost complete, and we look forward to the reopening on May 12 so we can once again welcome visitors to this iconic monument to our nation’s first President,” NPS director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in a statement.
The 5.8-magnitude quake had left more than 150 cracks in the structure, the park service said.
Public tours will begin at 1 p.m. on May 12, following the reopening ceremony. Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis starting at 8:30 a.m. that day at the Washington Monument Lodge, located on 15th Street, between Madison and Jefferson drives. Tickets for tours on future dates will be available starting on April 16, at 10 a.m. The monument will be open from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. until the end of summer.
