"The traveler cannot satisfactorily view the many wonders of Yosemite in less than a week," the authors of the 1913 "California Tourist Guide and Handbook: Authentic Description of Routes of Travel and Points of Interest" wrote.
For most of the year, we focus on giving readers up-to-the-minute travel intelligence. But today, as 2013 nears an end, we’re testing your California travel savvy, 1913-style. To help us we have authors Wells and Aubrey Drury, who in 1913 published the 354-page “California Tourist Guide and Handbook: Authentic Description of Routes of Travel and Points of Interest” (Western Guidebook Co., Berkeley).
The Beverly Hills Hotel was already in business and the Los Angeles Aqueduct had just been completed. But there was no talk yet of ski resorts at Lake Tahoe.
