Quarterback Matt Cassel will sit out the remainder of the season, the Minnesota Vikings announced Wednesday.
The former USC quarterback suffered a foot injury during Sunday’s 20-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He was placed on the Vikings’ season-ending injured-reserve list Wednesday.
Cassel told reporters he was disappointed both “personally” and “professionally” after spending the off-season preparing as the Vikings’ starter.
“It’s devastating,” he said.
In three games, Cassel completed 41 of 71 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns, with three interceptions.
Teddy Bridgewater, the Vikings’ first-round pick from Louisville, will replace Cassel, whose contract expires in 2015.
