USC football: Cody Kessler learned lesson on overthrow

USC quarterback Cody Kessler would like to have at least one play back from last week’s 35-7 victory over Boston College.

Kessler threw downfield on the first play of the game, but the ball just eluded the grasp of diving receiver Marqise Lee.

USC fans, still peeved at Coach Lane Kiffin for his conservative play-calling against Washington State, cheered loudly at the attempt to open the playbook.

But when Kessler saw the play on film, he came away with one overriding thought.

“Don’t be so excited on the first play of the game and overthrow Marqise for the touchdown,” Kessler said. “That killed me.”

Kessler rebounded to complete 15 of his next 16 passes, including one that Lee took 80 yards for a touchdown and another short throw that tailback Tre Madden turned into a touchdown.

USC plays Utah State on Saturday at the Coliseum.
