Eden Prairie, MN (Sports Network) - The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission announced Thursday that the Metrodome’s roof must be fully replaced rather than repaired.

The roof on the home of the Vikings collapsed as a result of a snow storm in December and the MSFC indicated a new replacement will be functional by August 1, just in time for Minnesota’s preseason games.

The Vikings were forced to play their last two home games at neutral sites -- the Detroit Lions’ Ford Field and the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium -- after the roof caved under the weight of massive amounts of snow.

The team released a statement to its fans following Thursday’s news.

“[The Metrodome] will be available as the Vikings home for the 2011 NFL season. Knowing this was a major concern of fans, we are pleased that the MSFC’s decision removes the uncertainty and ensures continuity for you, as well as provides a safe environment for all users of the publicly-owned facility,” the statement read.

The Vikings are still trying to get funding for a long-term stadium solution.

The MSFC is a public body that owns and operates the Metrodome.
