Sochi Olympics: Best bests for Saturday TV

A look at the top events on Saturday at the Sochi Olympics:

MEN’S SLALOM

The U.S. hasn’t been a factor in the men’s slalom in a long time, so don’t expect a sweep of the slalom after Mikaela Shiffrin’s win on the women’s side. Even though Ted Ligety won the giant slalom, it doesn’t really translate to the tighter gates of the traditional race. The winner will probably come from Austria, Germany or Norway.

FOUR-MAN BOBSLED

Steven Holcomb is hoping to become the first U.S. driver to win back-to-back Olympic golds in 82 years. But it’s not going to be easy. He has a calf injury that could jeopardize the U.S. chances. Saturday is the first two of four runs, with the final runs taking place just before the closing ceremony.

SPEEDSKATING

The long track competition finishes up with the men’s and women’s team pursuit. The U.S. did not qualify either team for the finals. It’s the first time since 1984 that the U.S. did not win a long-track medal. The Netherlands, which has cleaned up the speedskating medals, are the prohibitive favorites on this last day of competition.

PARALLEL SLALOM

This latest invention of a sport will be lacking much — if any — of a U.S. presence. No one qualified on the women’s side and only Justin Reiter on the men’s. Reiter almost made the team in 2006 and 2010 and then took a couple years off before coming back and making the current team.
