Loyola Marymount men advance in West Coast Conference tournament

LAS VEGAS — Evan Payne scored 19 points as 10th-seeded Loyola Marymount edged past No. 7 seed Portland, 67-64, on Thursday night and advanced to the quarterfinals in the West Coast Conference tournament.
The game stayed within a two-point margin through the last five minutes, with four lead changes and one tie until Nick Stover hit a layup and two free throws to give the Lions a four-point advantage with 12 seconds left.
Stover and Anthony Ireland scored 14 points each. The Lions (13-18) shot just four of 15 from three-point range but went 19 of 24 from the free-throw line.
Thomas van der Mars and Bobby Sharp scored 18 points each for the Pilots (15-16), who grabbed 12 more rebounds than the Lions.
Santa Clara 81, Pacific 64: Jared Brownridge scored 20 points to lead the Broncos (14-18) past the Tigers (15-15).
WOMEN
Pepperdine 80, Santa Clara 74: Ea Shoushtari scored 30 points and Grace Leah Baughn added 19 as the Waves (6-24), seeded 10th, defeated the seventh-seeded Broncos (10-20) in a game that featured 15 lead changes. Shoushtari scored 13 points in the last two minutes, when she was six for six from the free-throw line.
San Francisco 63, Loyola Marymount 62: The Dons’ Taj Winston scored on a putback with one second left to beat the Lions, who led 56-49 with 7:48 remaining before San Francisco scored eight straight points. Deanna Johnson led ninth-seeded Loyola Marymount (9-21) with 16 points.
