Racing! The answer man is back in the house
- Share via
Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we get an explanation of why information on past performance of European horses is always so incomplete.
The answer man is in the house so here’s what we’ve got for you today. If you have any questions you would like to have answered, drop me a line at [email protected]. We’ll do our best to get the answers.
On to the questions.
Archer Brown asks: Why is the information for horses that have run in Europe so limited? In the DRF there is very little on how the horse ran other than start and finish. Is there a better source for information?
For this question, which frankly I’ve always wondered myself, I went to Steve Andersen of the Daily Racing Form, who not only is the publication’s eyes and ears at Santa Anita but is also the European racing expert for DRF. So, Steve, what do you say?
“European racing, particularly that in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has more of a commentary-based review of performances than the statistical data prevalent in the United States.
“For example, there is little emphasis on timing racing in quarter-mile segments at European tracks, or recording margins between runners through different stages of a race, because so many of the tracks are vastly different, in terms of course layouts, conditions of turf, and undulations. That is starting to change to some extent, particularly on the all-weather tracks, which more closely resemble American dirt racing. Fractional timing, or as they call it, sectional timing, is shown on television monitors during the races at some venues.
“It is doubtful race data will be collected in Europe the way it is done here. But European race watchers do an excellent job of reviewing performances in a sentence or two of commentary for each horse. Within those commentaries, a better understanding can be gained of a how a horse raced, even though it's quite a bit different than what appears in Daily Racing Form for everyday U.S. runners.”
Thanks, Steve, for your always smart views on racing here and abroad.
Lori Allen asks: It seems that the weight of horses has recently appeared on handicapping sites. What's the handicapping angle of this?
For this question, I go to our in-house expert on handicapping, Bob Ike.
“Personally, horse weight is not something I pay attention to. And with the information not posted until the horses come on the track (at Santa Anita, at least), I don't know how that could possibly help anyone with 10 minutes until post. Can't imagine someone changing their handicapping opinions that late in the game because a horse weighed 20 pounds more or less than in its last start.”
Thanks, Bob, as always, for your insight.
As an aside, I grew up in Florida, which is in the heart of greyhound country. I did pay attention to a dog’s weight if it was exceedingly high or low or if they were two pounds off their last race. Weight loss is obviously a bad thing and could indicate sickness, especially because dogs usually race twice a week. (The best ones on Wednesday and Saturday.)
Also, in a sport with no jockeys, a big dog could adversely affect others in how they handle the first turn, especially if they blow the turn (the canine equivalent of going five wide and taking competitors with you). It’s just a fact that smaller dogs can get pushed around by bigger dogs. What does that have to do with those of you reading this newsletter? Nothing. So, move along, nothing to read here.
Santa Anita review
Those of you watching on TVG missed Michael Wrona’s call of the start of the Grade 3 $100,000 Las Cienegas Stakes as their on-site host. The man we’ve dubbed (and legions of subscribers have agreed) MA, for Mr. Annoying, talked about his Twitter account. If I don’t hear Michael’s “Racing” call, then the race is incomplete.
But once the race was picked up, you saw Coniah, from the one post, essentially going gate to wire under a masterful ride from Kent Desormeaux. It was trainer William Morey’s first-ever graded stakes win.
The winning margin over a good effort by Bendable on the 6½ furlong downhill turf course was 1¾ lengths. Coniah paid $6.40, $3.40 and $2.60.
“It took me almost 1,600 wins to get my first graded win,” Morey told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “It feels pretty good. I was very confident. I thought she looked great out there and I had Kent in charge, so I wasn’t looking at fractions.”
Princess Princess, at 22-1, finished third.
There was a single pick-six winner on Saturday worth $91,374. It was a $240 ticket bought at a wagering hub in Maryland. Are you telling me that Maryland bettors are smarter than California ones? C’mon, up your game, L.A.
Santa Anita preview
It’s a very odd Sunday at Santa Anita as it joins Easter and Father’s Day as the only Sunday without a stakes race. But that’s OK; go to some of the smaller tracks and they celebrate when they do have a stakes race. For us, it’s almost every weekend day.
There is one allowance race and three allowance/optional claiming, which is essentially the same thing as an allowance in that very few horses are usually up for sale. All four races carry a purse of $56,000.
But Saturday’s smaller fields, maybe a blip, seems like it could be headed into more of a trend when you look at Sunday. And that would be very bad. The field sizes for Sunday, in race order are: 7, 6, 6, 8, 6, 8, 8, 10, 10. And there are no also eligibles.
The average field size for this Sunday is 7.7. Last Sunday it was 9.1, and the Sunday before that it was 10.
I don’t know enough about how to manage a horse population and write races to make any sweeping judgments. But, I believe that this is the first day in this meeting with three races with field sizes of only six. Bears watching, for sure.
Anyway, any day at the races is fun. First post is 12:30. And, not to get ahead of ourselves, but next Saturday — Pegasus Day at Gulfstream — the first post has been moved up to 11:45 a.m. And it’s a great card at Santa Anita with Cal Cup and Sunshine Million races.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day
FOURTH RACE: No. 7 Forbidden Command (10-1)
The older mare has won more races (eight) than the rest of the field combined and offers good value in this first-level Cal-bred allowance race. She comes off two straight dirt wins vs. $8,000 claimers and was claimed by the high-percentage Genaro Vallejo barn. With good tactical speed over a turf course that has been kind to front-runners, let's take a shot at a nice price.
Saturday Result: Ronald R trailed early and only passed tired horses in the lane.
Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).
Ed Burgart LA play of the day
FIRST RACE: No. 1 Valedictoriette (3-1)
She looms dangerous with the big class drop and ran OK over the night 5/8-mile oval three outs ago when third in an 870-yard maiden race vs. prior maiden $20,000 third-place finisher Stormy Countess. Conditioner Mike Harrington is stabled locally, and the filly has remained in steady training. Favorite Sweet Miss Honey has been idle for nearly seven weeks since forcing a quick pace vs. tougher and looks vulnerable.

NOTHING BUT HEAT a bit fractious in the gate, settled inside, came out leaving the second turn and three wide into the stretch and lacked the needed rally.
