USC, Loyola Marymount advance in NCAA women’s soccer tournament

A pair of goals by Morgan Andrews and another score from Sydney Sladek staked USC to a huge halftime lead and the Trojans cruised from there, beating Princeton, 3-0, in a second-round game of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament Friday in Charlottesville, Va.
In another second-round game, Sarah Sanger scored in the fifth minute and goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt stopped seven shots to make the goal stand up in Loyola Marymount’s 1-0 win over Minnesota in Morgantown, W.Va.
For 11th-ranked USC, Friday’s win was only the school’s second in nine tries in the second round of the College Cup. The Trojans (15-5-2), who advanced to the third round of the tournament for the third time in school history and the first time since 2008, will play top-ranked Virginia on Sunday.
Loyola Marymount reached the College Cup’s third round for the first time. The Lions (15-5-1), making their first NCAA tournament appearance in nine years, hadn’t won a postseason game in two previous tries. They will meet West Virginia on Sunday.
In the men’s tournament, UCLA, a finalist last season, will play Seattle in a second-round game Sunday.
