NCAA women: No. 12 BYU upsets No. 5 N.C. State in L.A.

Brigham Young of the West Coast Conference never looked the part of an underdog as it knocked off No. 5-seeded North Carolina State, 72-57, Saturday at Pauley Pavilion to pull off the biggest upset of the first day of this year’s NCAA women’s tournament.

The 12th-seeded Cougars (27-6) led by seven at halftime and never trailed in the second half of teams in the Lincoln (Neb.) Regional. They will play Nebraska in the second round Monday.

No. 4 Nebraska 74, No. 13 Fresno State 55: The Cornhuskers (26-6) pulled away after the Bulldogs (22-11) got as close as four points in the second half at Pauley Pavilion.

In other Lincoln Regional games:

No. 2 Duke 87, No. 15 Winthrop 45: The Blue Devils (28-6) shot 54% in the win at Durham, N.C.

No. 7 DePaul 104, No. 10 Oklahoma 100: In the highest-scoring regulation game in NCAA women’s tournament history, the Blue Demons (28-6) won as Megan Rogowski made the go-ahead three-point shot with 40.5 seconds left at Durham.

Stanford Regional

No. 2 Stanford 81, No. 15 South Dakota 62: The Cardinal (30-3) went on a 19-4 run after the Coyotes (19-14) took a 13-12 lead at Ames, Iowa.

No. 10 Florida State 55, No. 7 Iowa State 44: The Seminoles (21-11) rode a 44-30 rebounding edge over the host Cyclones (20-11) at Ames.

Notre Dame Regional

No. 7 California 64, No. 10 Fordham 63: Brittany Boyd scored 16 of her 22 points after halftime, including the go-ahead basket with 14 seconds left at Waco, Texas.

No. 2 Baylor 87, No. 15 Western Kentucky 74: Without Coach Kim Mulkey, who was suspended one game for criticizing officials, the Bears (30-4) held off the Hilltoppers (24-9) with 32 points from Nina Davis and 31 points from Odyssey Sims at Waco.

No. 9 Arizona State 69, No. 8 Vanderbilt 61: The Sun Devils (23-9) shot 62% to upset the Commodores at Toledo, Ohio.

No. 1 Notre Dame 93, No. 16 Robert Morris 42: The Irish (33-0) led 50-15 at halftime at Toledo.

No. 3 Kentucky 106, No. 14 Wright State 60: The Wildcats (25-8) had 67 rebounds and 12 blocks in the win at Lexington, Ky.

No. 6 Syracuse 59, No. 11 Chattanooga 53: The Orange (23-9) won at Lexington despite losing leading scorer Brittney Sykes to a knee injury with 12:46 left.

No. 5 Oklahoma State 61, No. 12 Florida Gulf Coast 60 (OT): Tiffany Bias was 0 for 8 from the field before her layup with 41 seconds left in overtime lifted the Cowboys (24-8) over the Eagles (26-8) at West Lafayette, Ind.

No. 4 Purdue 84, No. 13 Akron 55: The Boilermakers (22-8) had a 50-28 rebounding edge over the Zips (23-10) in the win at West Lafayette.
