Southern Section is developing formula to change playoff format

Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod said he is moving forward trying to come up with a formula that would place football and other sports teams in playoff divisions individually instead of by the league they compete in.
The next playoff division revisions are scheduled for 2016, so a decision by the Southern Section Council will be needed by October of 2015. Otherwise, the current model of mostly placing leagues in various divisions will have to be maintained.
“The commitment is to develop a formula,” Wigod said.
It would involve using computer rankings, strength of schedule, playoff performance and deciding how much weight should be given to each.
“We’re studying different models out there and seeing if we can find a formula that applies for our sports,” he said.
The concept would appear to have lots of support, but Wigod said, “There’s a lot to do. We have the tools to do it, study it and show it to people in advance. People like the concept, but they’re going to say, ‘What does it mean for my school?’
“We’re studying this thing very hard and it’s still going to be up to the Council.”
