Granada Hills won its 11th City Section girls’ golf championship in 15 years under Coach Steve Thompson on Monday, and the Highlanders also celebrated an individual title for sophomore Carol Cheng.
Cheng and another sophomore, Amanda Lee of Cleveland, finished tied for first in the individual competition after shooting one-under 72s at Balboa Golf Course, but Cheng was awarded the victory based on a better back nine score.
It was the second consecutive year Lee had to settle for second place. This time, she did her best on the final hole, making a par putt. Last year, she had a double bogey.
“I feel I did pretty well and had faith in my putting,” Lee said.
Cheng, who finished third last season as a freshman, was a model of consistency all day. She had a bogey on the first hole and the rest were pars except for two birdies. She had a great chance to win outright on No. 17, but a seven-foot birdie putt lipped around the hole and went out.
It was the fifth consecutive City title for the Highlanders. JoJo Rucker shot 79 to aid Cheng. The Highlanders finished with a score of 406, a City record. North Hollywood finished second with a school-record score of 449. Freshman Jasmine Lew shot 78.
