Football: Crenshaw win over Loyola makes Cougar fans feel good

City Section teams didn’t come away with too many victories in their clashes this past weekend with Southern Section opponents, but one triumph that didn’t go unnoticed was Crenshaw’s double-overtime victory over Loyola.

Jacob Knight rushed for 183 yards in 27 carries. Quarterback Ajene Harris rushed for 61 yards in 11 carries and scored three touchdowns, including touchdowns in each overtime period.

“I love to share the ball because it opens up our offense to make big plays,” Harris said. “The plan was to run it and keep running until it opens up the pass. I like having the ball in my hands when the pressure’s on. Even though I didn’t play great, we still had a chance to win at the end. I told the coaches [on the last play] we only need one yard and I can get it.”
Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said of Harris, “He’s a big-time player. He’s an exceptional field general, he has great vision, he can throw on the run and his ability to make something out of nothing is what separates him from others. His leadership speaks for itself _ he’s shown it repeatedly the last two years.”

Next up for Crenshaw (1-1) is a tough nonleague game on the road against Fresno Edison. Loyola (1-2) plays top-ranked St. John Bosco at Valley College.
