Football: Coach Dan Kelly keeps Arleta rolling
- Share via
When Jeff Engilman retired as football coach at Arleta after the 2010 season, he believed he left the program in the capable hands of assistant Dan Kelly, who he had trained at Sylmar and Arleta. Kelly and his group of strong assistants have kept the program going strong.
After seasons of 9-2 and 8-3 while playing in City Section Division I, the Mustangs opened their season last week with a 35-21 victory over El Camino Real. Sophomore running back Isaiah Gable rushed for 127 yards in just six carries. Junior linebacker Marco Gonzalez contributed 17 tackles.
Arleta will once again be the favorite to win the East Valley League. Grant and Poly will try to stay close to the Mustangs. Grant opened with a 26-21 win over Bell. After losing to El Camino Real in its opener, Poly came back to defeat Bernstein, 26-13.
