Football: Camarillo (9-0) looking like team of destiny
- Share via
So how do they keep doing it? I’m talking about the unbeaten Camarillo Scorpions. They’re 9-0 and ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Northern Division. Their latest victory, 49-45 over Thousand Oaks, has people shaking their heads in astonishment.
Thousand Oaks quarterback Max Gilliam, bound for California, couldn’t have played any better. He had 326 yards passing and three touchdowns and ran for 135 yards and one touchdown.
And yet, Camarillo rallied for the win, getting a touchdown pass from Jake Constantine to Frankie Tostado with 1:15 left.
Camarillo is also the team that handed Calabasas its only defeat.
Camarillo is a neighborhood team. In other words, the chemistry is off the charts. The players are best friends playing for each other, not necessarily to impress college scouts.
Yes, several would love to get an offer or two. Constantine completed 25 of 34 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a TD. Some have scholarship offers in other sports.
What’s happening is that a group of outstanding high school athletes have united to enjoy a senior season that keeps creating special moments.
