Exhibition baseball: Dodgers beat Padres, fall to White Sox

AT THE PLATE: Dee Gordon was two for three with a triple, raising his exhibition average to .282. Gordon also stole a base, making him nine for his ninth in nine on the spring on stolen-base attempts. Manager Don Mattingly has been highly complimentary of Gordon, an indication he could be the team’s opening-day second baseman.
ON THE MOUND: Closer Kenley Jansen threw another scoreless inning to maintain his 0.00 earned-run average. Chris Perez gave up two hits in the third inning, but left-hander J.P. Howell came in to retire Yonder Alonso and prevented the Padres from scoring.
EXTRA BASES: Brandon League hasn’t pitched well this spring, posting a 16.87 earned-run average in three exhibition games. Now, he’s not pitching at all. League last pitched Monday and has since thrown only a bullpen session. The Dodgers will have him pitch Sunday in a minor league intrasquad game. League is unlikely to be cut because of his contract, which guarantees him $17 million over the next two seasons. That doesn’t guarantee him a place on the opening-day roster, as the Dodgers could make him one of their three roster-exempt players and leave him in Arizona to continue working while they travel to Australia.
