Misbehavior Standings: Commissioners, owners pile up losses
- Share via
Few sports fans bat an eye anymore when a pro athlete is arrested for drug possession or gets suspended for using performance enhancing drugs. But when you can't count on the people in the front office or the owner's suite to stay out of trouble, you're taking sports mischief to a whole new level.
No doubt there have been other years when commissioners, general managers and owners have made headlines for the wrong reasons, but 2014 already has presented some memorable missteps. Just ask NFL commish Roger Goodell -- if ever he emerges from his spider hole.
To help you keep track, we have created the first-ever Owner/Commissioner/GM standings.
COMMISSIONERS & GMS DIVISION | Team/league | W/L | Comment |
---|---|---|---|
Adam Silver, commissioner | NBA | 1-0 | Just two months after taking over for David Stern, Donald Sterling throws you a powder keg with his racist audio recording. But you field it like a Gold Glove shortstop and toss him out. |
Rob Manfred, commissioner | MLB | 0-1 | You took a loss before you even took office (which doesn't happen until January) when opposition voters, led by White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, forced a stalemate before finally relenting and electing you. |
Danny Ferry, general manager | Atlanta Hawks | 0-1 | Just so we're clear, those weren't your racist thoughts about Luol Deng, you just read the racism? |
Ruben Amaro Jr., general manager | Philadelphia Phillies | 0-1 | Earlier this month, The Sporting News named you worst GM in baseball for engineering a World Series champion's steady decline to last place in the National League East. |
Roger Goodell, commissioner | NFL | 0-2 | First, you admittedly go too light on Ray Rice's punishment. Then you get blindsided by leaked security video of him punching his now-wife. If an NFL investigation reveals a cover-up, it's three strikes and you're out. |
OWNERS DIVISION | Team/league | W/L | Comment |
Dan Gilbert | Cleveland Cavaliers | 2-1 | First, you luck into LeBron James in the draft, then you lose him to Miami, then you luck into landing him again in free agency. Was it that letter you wrote? No one can resist Comic Sans. |
Steve Bisciotti | Baltimore Ravens | 1-1 | You were a couple of days late with properly addressing the Ray Rice situation, but at least you cut him and apologized for your missteps in a letter to fans. |
Bruce Levenson | Atlanta Hawks | 0-1 | Just so we're clear, you were shocked by all the black people who follow the NBA in the city of Atlanta? |
Jim Irsay | Indianapolis Colts | 0-1 | You were suspended six games and fined $500,000 for your prescription drug arrest in March. |
Donald Sterling | L.A. Clippers | 0-47 | At a certain point we stopped counting. |
