Senior left-handed pitcher Ben Jacobs earned the win as the Huntington Beach High baseball team won at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon, 5-1, on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division I playoffs on the road.
Jacobs allowed four hits and one earned run for No. 6-seeded Huntington Beach (23-9). He walked two and struck out six, improving to 9-2.
Trent Grindlinger was two for three with two runs batted in and a run scored for the Oilers. Dean Carpentier also had a two-run hit, and Tony Martinez was two for three with a run scored.
No. 3-seeded La Costa Canyon finished its season 24-11.
Huntington Beach hosts No. 7-seeded Villa Park in a Division I regional semifinal Thursday at 4 p.m.
Newport Harbor 4, Woodland Hills El Camino Real 0: Senior right-handed pitcher Trent Liolios pitched a complete-game shutout for the Sailors in Tuesday’s CIF Southern California Regional Division III first-round game on the road.
Liolios allowed four hits for No. 5-seeded Newport Harbor (20-12). He struck out three.
Austin Lueck and Lucas Perez each had a pair of RBIs for the Sailors. A.J. Guitron-Moore was two for two with two runs scored.
No. 4 El Camino Real finished 18-13.
Newport Harbor plays at top-seeded Chula Vista Eastlake in a Division III semifinal game Thursday at 4 p.m.
