UC Irvine 7

LONG BEACH — The 49ers, ranked No. 9, outscored UC Irvine, 3-2, in the fourth quarter and defeated the No. 7-ranked Anteaters in a nonconference game Thursday night.

The teams were tied, 5-5, entering the fourth quarter and after Long Beach State took a 6-5 lead, UCI scored the next two goals to move ahead, 7-6.

Patrick van der Linde tied the game for the 49ers with 2 minutes, 43 seconds left and Justin Koeppen hit the game-winning goal with 1:08 left.

Tom Kruip led the Anteaters (6-3) with four goals and Cole Bielskis added two.

Alexsandr Petrovic and van der Linde led Long Beach State (4-2) with two goals apiece.

Matt Johnson, the Anteaters’ junior goalie, had five saves.

UCI travels to No. 2-ranked UCLA Saturday night at 7.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, Soka 0

ALISO VIEJO — The Lions recorded their fifth shutout of the season in the nonconference road match Wednesday.

Danielle Dintino, Heather Mauck and Gabriele Valles scored for Vanguard (5-1).

Jill Foss and Tessa Bowie each played a half in goal for the visitors, though neither recorded a save.

The Lions will next play at San Diego Christian Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Vanguard is ranked No. 10 in the NAIA. Cal Baptist (No. 1), Azusa Pacific (No. 2) and Concordia (No. 5), teams that play in the Golden State Athletic Conference with the Lions, are also ranked.
