Triangle Square to have benefit for cancer foundation

The massive renovation of Triangle Square may be a couple years away, but Chronic Cantina owner Keith Scheinberg isn’t going to wait that long for festivities. On Sunday, the restaurant on the mall’s second floor plans to have an all-day benefit for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with guest speakers, live bands, an outdoor barbecue and fashion shows to raise money for cancer research. The fashion shows will begin at 3 p.m. and take place once an hour, with a raffle after each one. There will also be a champagne brunch at 11 a.m.

Admission to the fundraiser is free, but patrons may make donations at the door. In June, the restaurant had a similar fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation and garnered around $7,000, according to Scheinberg. The mall’s large upstairs patio, he said, made an ideal space for a community function.

“If you look at the history of Triangle Square, they used to have some really big-name bands up there a decade ago — Green Day, No Doubt,” Scheinberg said. “Seeing how we’re the only ones up there now and there’s so much space, there’s nothing better to do than throw a charity event.”
