Hogan a victor

NEWPORT BEACH — Corona del Mar High’s Hailey Hogan, and her partner Clarke Spinosa of Claremont, won their opening match of the X Team Tennis National High School Tournament on Friday at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
Hogan, who will be a sophomore in the fall, and Spinosa got off to a good start in the double-elimination, six-team tournament, beating Marcy Osborne and Ted Burchett of Sacramento, 18-3.
The team score is the combined game scores from one set each of boys’ singles, girls’ singles and mixed doubles.
Sage Hill School’s Jaclyn Smrecek and Andrew Kurzwell lost their first match to Blair Reed and Robert Rugen of Sacramento, 18-3.
The tournament continues with three more round-robin matches beginning today at 11 a.m., and continuing at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Hogan and Spinosa play the Sage Hill teammates in the second round today at 11 a.m.
The fifth round-robin matches are Sunday at 9 a.m., with the two top teams competing for the championship at 11 a.m.
All matches will be at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
