NEW YORK — The Newport Beach Breakers were tied heading into the last set but lost a road match to the New York Buzz, 20-16, Wednesday at CDPHP Stadium.
The Breakers (3-6) led throughout the night until the final two sets. But New York’s Greta Arn beat Newport Beach’s Michaela Pastikova, 5-2, in women’s singles to tie the match at 15-15.
In mixed doubles, Arn and Rik de Voest then teamed for a 5-1 victory over Pastikova and Rick Leach, clinching the match for New York (5-5).
Tennis legend Pete Sampras also played his second of four matches for the Breakers. He and Leach teamed for a 5-1 men’s doubles win to open the match.
But Sampras then lost in men’s singles to de Voest, 5-2.
Pastikova and Lauren Albanese won a 5-4 set over Arn and Gabriela Navratilova in women’s doubles, giving the Breakers a 13-10 lead that they couldn’t hold.
The Newport Beach Breakers have Sampras again as it is at the Philadelphia Freedoms today at 4:05 p.m. PDT. They then play at Sacramento Saturday, when Lindsay Davenport competes.
