Tars’ Roberts league MVP

Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo senior Sarah Roberts has been named Sunset League MVP, and Coach Bill Barnett was named Sunset League Coach of the Year.
Roberts, a team captain who is headed to the University of Michigan, scored a team-high 67 goals for Newport Harbor (20-10) this season. Playing at set, Roberts helped lead the Sailors to a 5-0 record in league, and was named to the all-tournament team at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions and the Irvine Southern California Championships.
Teammates Mimi Bury, Jillian Chiapuzio and Allyssa Peterson also earned first-team All-Sunset League status.
Bury, a junior, scored 44 goals this season, and also had a team-high 27 assists.
Chiapuzio, a senior who has committed to Cal, scored 29 goals, and won more than 90% of sprints to open quarters.
Peterson, a senior, scored 28 goals and also excelled as the Sailors’ primary two-meter defender. She was named all-tournament at the Tournament of Champions.
Senior Marisa Cottam and juniors Jessica Robinson and Morgan Vickers were named second-team all-league. Cottam hada team-high 57 steals, the left-handed Robinson had 24 goals and Vickers made 213 saves.
Senior Betsy Martin received honorable mention.
