The Corona del Mar boys’ under-12 Silver All-Stars won the AYSO Area K championship on Feb. 3, beating Tustin, 3-2, in the championship game at Long Beach’s El Dorado Park.
The CdM boys, who went by the team name of “Newport United,” then won the Area Q championship on Feb. 10, again beating Tustin, 3-2, in the championship game.
Newport United went 9-0-1 over the all-star season.
“It was a very balanced team,” Coach Kevan Wilkinson said. “I had eight different players score goals. There was no one single scorer. They were a very disciplined team.”
Cameron Davis, Henry Verey and Andrew Penunuri all scored goals for Newport United during the Area K title-game win.
Wilkinson said he utilized a 4-4-2 formation, with just two forwards.
Nine different players scored in 10 CdM games.
“Our defenders and midfielders also scored some goals for us,” Wilkinson said. “We always had six players attacking at all times.”
Also contributing for the United were Michael Allen, Camden Blower, Tommy Casey, Jason Crane, Robbie Farber, Walter Frome, Ian Hill, Jacob Kim, Giancarlo Sandoval, Gregory Williford and Campbell Woods.
