Anteaters open with a victory

IRVINE — The UC Irvine women’s tennis team dominated in singles, winning five of six matches, to earn a 5-2 nonconference victory Sunday over Nevada in the season opener at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
Sophomore Heidi Kaloi and junior Jessica Broadfoot added to their singles’ wins by combining to capture the only doubles triumph for Coach Mike Edles’ Anteaters, ranked No. 55.
Kaloi defeated Bach-Lan Pham, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, while Broadfoot topped Audrey Bardot, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Junior Inna Abababian (No. 2), sophomore Clare Fermin (No. 3) and sophomore Ali Borowicz (No. 6) also earned singles victories for the hosts.
Fermin posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Ly-Huong Dinh.
Abababian outlasted Caroline Bailly, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, while Borowicz did the same against Laetitia Tan, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
UCI junior Becky Berhard lost at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4, to Maria Mizyuk.
