Laguna youth polo begins new season with big win

The Laguna Beach Age Group Water Polo girls’ 14-and-Under team played its first match of the year Sunday and came away with a 9-3 victory over Corona del Mar.

The match began the long road for Laguna which has its sights on the Junior Olympics in August.

Jessica Shusko led all scorers with five goals. Other Laguna goals came from Hannah Lawson, Jessie Holechek, Melina Masson and Yoshi Andersen.

Laguna’s defense, paced by keeper Edy Manetta, Riley Duncan, Candyce Schroeder and Lyda De Groote, kept Corona del Mar off the scoreboard in the first half.

Also making key contributions were team newcomers Nicole Hoes and Bridgette Alvarez.
