Honors on the gridiron

Laguna Beach High quarterback Charley Bowman has been named to the 2006 11 Man Football All Amateur Athletic Foundation Team Awards Southern Division team.

The team awards for all 13 Southern Section divisions were announced Monday through the CIF office by the Southern California Interscholastic Football Coaches Assn.

Bowman, a junior, was named the utility player on the division’s 21-player offensive team.

The Southern Division honors were headed by MVP Eric Okula and Coach of the Year, Mitch Olson, both of Kennedy High of La Palma.

In addition to the Southern Division award, Bowman also has been named the offensive co-MVP on the 2006 All-Orange Coast League team. He shares the honor with Estancia senior Matt Redding.

During the 2006 season, Bowman rushed for 373 yards and eight touchdowns on 94 attempts. He passed for 1,158 yards and five touchdowns, completing 125 of 215 attempts to rank second among passers in the Orange Coast League.

“I’m excited about the honors, especially making the Southern Division team as a junior,” Bowman said. “It’s a great feeling.

“But first of all, I’d like to thank my teammates, especially my offensive line, for all they have done for me. Without them, I wouldn’t have either of these honors.”

Also earning one of the league’s top awards was Laguna senior Alex Smith who was named Special Teams MVP.

Overall, Laguna placed seven players on the first team and five others on the second team.

The Breakers won the championship with a record of 3-0 in the first year of the newly-created Orange Coast League.
