Radeva captures title

Costa Mesa resident Nelly Radeva defeated McCall Jones of Coto de
Caza, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, in the three-hour girls 16s singles final of the
38th annual Easter Bowl national championships Sunday in Palm
Springs.
Radeva, unseeded, won the first four games of the second set to
establish some confidence against the No. 4-seeded Jones.
It was the most prestigious victory over Radeva’s young career.
UCI’s St. John second
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine freshman Danielle St. John finished
second in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 5 inches at
the Long Beach invitational Saturday.
Kat Dawkins placed third in the long jump (18-10 3/4 ) and Erricka
Williams was eighth in the triple jump (36-10 1/4 ) for the Anteaters.
UCI’s Julian Eison was second in the men’s high jump (6-8 3/4 )
while Patrick Grogan was fourth in the triple jump (46-5 1/4 ) and
Michael Cao was fourth in the pole vault (14-7 1/4 ).
Shaw breaks record
* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University senior Brandon Shaw
finished second in the 800 meters in the fastest section of the
University/Open division at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays Friday
in Walnut.
Shaw’s time of 1 minute, 50.5 seconds broke the 30-year-old school
record set by Dan Prestand (1:50.54).
At the Pomona Pitzer invitational Friday, Vanguard junior Matt
Meyer won his heats in the 800 and 1,500, posting personal bests of
1:54.16 and 3:51.51, respectively. He met the automatic 1,500
qualifying standard for nationals.
Junior Jenny Thune broke her own school record by winning her
1,500 heat in 4:34.10.
Senior Debby Chop broke her own school record in the long jump
with a mark of 17-4.
