CdM breaks records

The headline-grabbing Corona del Mar High girls track and field

distance standouts snatched the spotlight again Friday night at the

Mt. San Antonio College relays, notching a school record, a meet

record and this year’s fastest time in the nation in the four-mile

relay event.

The combination of Allison Damon, Sara Cummings, Hilary May and

Annie St. Geme clocked in at 20:32.33 for the sixth-fastest time ever

in the nation and exactly a minute in front of second-place finisher

College Park, the previous meet-record holder in the event.

Damon’s split time was 5:08, Cummings’ was 5:13, May’s was 5:12

and St. Geme’s was 4:55 in the mile, slightly longer than 1,600

meters.

The CdM girls now hold the current fastest times in the nation in

two events -- the first being the distance medley relay accomplished

last Saturday at the Arcadia invitational.

Glatch wins in doubles

* TENNIS: Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch will go for her

second victory in the girls 18s division today at the 38th Easter

Bowl United States Tennis Association championships after she teamed

with Lindsay Burdette for the doubles crown Friday at the Riviera

Resort in Palm Springs.

Glatch and Burdette, the second-seeded duo, upset top-seeded

Jennifer Lee Heinser and Elizabeth Plotkin, 6-1, 6-4, Friday.

Glatch, 15, who reached today’s singles final, where she is the

top seed, following a 6-0, 6-1 victory Friday over Yasmin Schnack.

Glatch, who has lost just four games the last four matches, faces

Heinser, the No. 2 seed, in today’s final.

Fellow Newport Beach resident Carsten Ball, the No. 2 seed,

reached today’s final in the boys 18 singles draw following a 5-7,

6-3, 7-5 victory over third-seeded Jesse Levine Friday. Ball will

face 10th-seeded Sam Querrey for the championship.

Nelly Radeva, from Costa Mesa, defeated Joanne Mather, 6-2, 6-2,

in the girls 16s quarterfinals Friday and faces second-seeded Kirsten

Flower in the today’s semifinals.

Cierra Gaytan-Leach of Corona del Mar and partner Catherine Isip

will compete for the girls 14s doubles title today following a 6-3,

6-2 upset victory over the second-seeded duo of Kathryn Talbert and

Ebie Wilson Friday. Gaytan-Leach and Isip, the No. 5 seeds, also

knocked off the third-seeded duo of Keri Frankenberger and Alexandra

Cercone, 7-6 (6), 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Esquivel named MVP

* TENNIS: Orange Coast College’s Michele Esquivel won the women’s

singles and was runner-up with teammate Jessica Rice in women’s

doubles in the Orange Empire Conference tournament Friday at Cypress

College.

Esquivel, who was voted the conference MVP, defeated Saddleback’s

Amanda Varela, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the singles final.

Valera got her revenge, however, as she and teammate Kathryn Malec

defeated Esquivel and Rice, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, in the two hour doubles

final.

Esquivel, Rice and Emily Paulson qualified in singles competition

for the regional tournament held in two weeks at Cerritos College.

Esquivel and Rice, along with Paulson and Rachael Sessum, who were

eliminated in the semifinals by Valera-Malec, qualified in doubles

for the regional tournament.

Players qualify for the state tournament if they advance to the

quarterfinals in regionals.

Esquivel and Rice will compete in singles in the Ojai tournament

next weekend.

Eagles fly high

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team swept past

host Orange, 25-17, 25-15, 25-17, Friday in a Golden West League

match.

Scott Markley led the Eagles with 13 kills, followed by his twin

brother Shaun, who had 9 kills. Trevor Holmes finished with 31

assists for Estancia (13-6, 7-0 in league).

Middle blocker Dallas Kopp shined in the back row, registering 11

digs and three service aces.

Career day for Caldwell

* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team downed

visiting Westminster, 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-13, Friday in a Golden

West League match.

Mitch Caldwell had a career-high 14 kills for the Mustangs as Ryan

Bagwell laid down a match-high 21 kills. Garrett Walthers had 12

kills and Andrew Melcer finished with a match-high 48 assists for

Mesa (10-2, 6-1 in league).

Trevor Smith and Tony Krikorian also played solid defense and

passed well, Coach Dave Sorrells said.

Estancia rallies late

* BASEBALL: Greg Hughes and Kane Curran both scored after an

overthrow at home plate, capping a three-run seventh inning to give

the Estancia High baseball team a 5-4 victory over Westminster

Friday.

Sophomore Blake Pinto’s swinging bunt to Westminster’s third

baseman started the final sequence and Curran, who went the distance

in tallying his first victory this season, slid to beat the throw at

the plate.

Westminster (11-7, 2-3-1 in league) took leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in

the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Pinto’s double plated Zack Oliver and freshman Ryan Redding

followed with an RBI single in the sixth for the Eagles (2-13, 2-3 in

league).

Tim Morley and Hughes drew one-out walks in the seventh, chasing

Lions’ starter Brian Gump.

OCC downs Lasers

* VOLLEYBALL: Ky Fell and Uriah Seui each had 19 kills to lead visiting Orange Cast College over Irvine Valley, 24-26, 26-24, 25-19,

25-19, Friday in an Orange Empire Conference match.

Drew Ginther added 52 assists for the Pirates.

Irvine Valley falls to 9-6, 6-3 in conference.

OCC (8-10, 4-5) plays host to Palomar Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a

conference match.

Sage goes extra for win

* SOFTBALL: Rebecca Hembarsky struck out eight, walked four and

retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth inning as the

Sage Hill School softball team needed extra time to defeat host

Whitney, 1-0, in an Academy League contest Friday.

Sage (6-5, 1-1 in league) scored its run in the top of the eighth.

With one out, Katie McKeon singled and stole second and third.

Lightning win twice

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team lost one set as

the Lightning beat host Oxford Academy, 17-1, Friday in an Academy

League match.

Tristan Cordier lost two games in his three sets at No. 1 singles

as Michael Garrison and Conrad Whitaker paired to only lose five

games in No. 2 doubles.

Sage Hill (9-5, 5-0 in league) also finished the second round of

previously rain-canceled match against Oxford. The match on March 22

was stopped with the Lightning up 6-0. Friday, Sage Hill finished the

match with a 16-2 decision.

Ramirez finishes 10th

* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine senior Kim Ramirez ran the

fifth-fastest time in Anteater history in the 1,500 meters at the Mt.

San Antonio College Relays Friday night with a mark of 4:23.20.

The time was third in her section and she placed 10th overall in

the field of 37 runners. Johanna Nilsson from Northern Arizona won

the event with a time of 4:18.60.

The Anteaters’ Ricky Barnes placed 27th in the 1,500 meters with a

time of 3:48.00 and Tom Whelan was 35th (3:51.13).

John Kluve finished 24th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a

time of 9:21.51 while David Santos was 41st in the 1,500 meters in

3:55.76.

OCC duo ousted

* TENNIS: Spencer Solomon and Colby Morita of the Orange Coast

College men’s doubles team defeated a team from College of the

Desert, 6-4, 6-3, in the Orange Empire Conference championship

quarterfinals Friday at Saddleback College, then lost to top-seeded

Jack Hui and Carlos Catalan of Desert, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinals.

Solomon (Costa Mesa High) and Morita, however, qualified for the

Southern California regionals April 28-30 at Cypress College.

Sailors fall back

* BASEBALL: Three RBI singles with one out by Foothill High’s

baseball team in the bottom of the sixth inning broke open a two-run

game and the host Knights went on to down Newport Harbor, 6-2, in a

Sea View League game Friday.

Taylor Young’s two-out single plated Chris Thompson, who had

doubled, in the third to cut Foothill’s lead to 2-1. Newport’s Skylar

Cozad scored on P.J. Errington’s double in the seventh

Patrick Keehan, Thompson and Errington all went 2 for 4 for the

Sailors (7-10, 2-5 in league), who fell four games behind

league-leading Aliso Niguel with the loss.

Concordia cages Lions

* BASEBALL: Concordia University turned a 16-hit performance into

a 13-1 shellacking of visiting Vanguard Friday in a Golden State

Athletic Conference game.

Vanguard (12-23, 8-13) will play host to the Eagles in a

doubleheader today starting at noon.

Hawaii beats ‘Eaters

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team lost, 9-6, to

Hawaii Friday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the

Anteater Aquatics Complex.

UCI (11-12, 4-8 in the federation) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the

first period as freshman Jessica Lewis scored a pair of goals.

Oxford pounds Sage

* BASEBALL: The Sage Hill School baseball team lost to host Oxford

Academy, 11-0, Friday in an Academy League game.

The Lightning (3-11, 0-6 in league) will finish a game against

Whitney Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Sage Hill before playing Whitney in a

full game. The game was canceled after four innings due to rain when

the game was originally scheduled in March.
