Charcas advances

Newport Harbor High junior Eddie Charcas pinned three of his four
opponents in the 119-pound weight class Friday to reach today’s final
of the CIF inland division wrestling championships at Los Osos High
in Rancho Cucamonga.
If Charcas wins his first two matches today -- competition begins
at 11 a.m. -- he will secure at least a top six finish and earn a
medal, Newport Coach Dominic Bulone said. The top five will advance
to the Masters Meet.
On Friday, Charcas pinned opponents from Santiago, Warren and
Paramount in 3:52, 2:13 and 4:06, respectively.
Mesa rolls in 1st round
* WATER POLO: Senior Sarah Bowman scored eight goals, three in a
six-goal second period, to lead the host Costa Mesa High girls water
polo team to a 15-2 victory over La Quinta in a CIF Southern Section
Division VI first-round game Friday afternoon.
Christine Twohig added three goals while Annie Le had two for the
fourth-seeded Mustangs (20-9), who will face Santa Monica at 3:15
p.m. Tuesday. A coin flip will determine the host team.
Seniors Allyson Harris and Carley Millian each tallied one goal
while goalkeepers Kelly Gentling and Brittany Mucha each made two
saves for Mesa, which reached the quarterfinals a year ago.
La Quinta finished 9-12.

Wrestlers in contention
* WRESTLING: Estancia High’s Alex Sotomayer and Efren Alvarez
wrestled in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division tournament
Friday at Westminster High, with both still in contention for the
Masters Meet.
Both will wrestle at 11 a.m. today at Westminster and need to win
three matches each in the consolation bracket to qualify for the
Masters. Sotomayer defeated his first opponent Friday, 10-2, but lost
in the quarterfinals in the 160-pound weight class.
Alvarez (189) lost his first match, but won tow in the consolation
bracket.
UC Irvine evens series
* BASEBALL: Third baseman Matt Anderson went 2 for 4 with two runs
scored and two RBIs to help lead the host UC Irvine baseball team to
a 9-6 victory against Brigham Young Friday, evening the three-game
series at one apiece at Anteater Ballpark.
Brett Dalton finished 3 for 5 with a triple and three RBIs while
Danny Miramontes tallied three hits and two RBIs in four at-bats for
the Anteaters (6-2), who have won five of their last six.
UCI starter Justin Cassel allowed five runs on 13 hits -- the
Cougars (1-1) tallied 18 in all -- while striking out four and
walking none in 5 1/3 innings to improve to 2-0.
Sophomore Blair Erickson struck out four in 1 2/3 innings of
scoreless relief to notch his second save of the season.
The teams conclude the series at 1 p.m. today.

‘Eaters tame Tigers
* VOLLEYBALL: Jayson Jablonsky slammed a match-high 18 kills,
leading four UC Irvine players in double figures as the host
Anteaters defeated University of the Pacific, 30-26, 30-22, 28-30,
30-19 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Friday.
Aaron Harrell tallied 14 kills while David Smith (11) and Steffin
Rangel (10) added to the hitting attack for UCI (6-9, 4-6 in the
MPSF), ranked 10th in the nation. Setter Brian Thornton amassed 54
assists while Brandon Mel tallied nine digs for the ‘Eaters.
The Tigers fell to 9-7, 3-5.
D’Alessandro shines
* BASKETBALL: Christen D’Alessandro tied an Orange Coast College
women’s basketball record by hitting eight three-pointers in Friday’s
82-70 home victory over Irvine Valley in an Orange Empire League
game.
D’Alessandro connected on 8 of 14 from behind the arc to tie
Shauna Steward, who also dropped in eight threes against Irvine
Valley in 2000.
D’Allessandro scored a game-high 27 points for OCC (17-12, 7-7 in
conference).
Vanessa Dominguez scored 22 points to led Irvine Valley (12-15,
6-8).

Clean sweep for Tars
* SURFING: Newport Harbor High’s surf team claimed all eight heats
and secured its fourth straight win with a 107-59 victory over Marina
at tower 22 Tuesday in Newport Beach.
The Sailors (5-4) took 19 of the top 24 positions with six surfers
placing first.
Daniel Shea, who posted the best wave score with a 6.0, and Stevie
Farmer, each recorded their sixth first-place finishes this season in
leading Newport’s boys short board team, which won, 53-50. Joey Head
(5.5) won for the fifth time this year.
Newport’s long board team swept the top three positions for the
second straight meet, led by Tanner Prairie’s fifth first-place
finish this season.
Lisa Turk won for the fifth time in the girls long board event
while Harry Tully claimed the body board title.
Charlie Buckingham, Brett Catron and Brian Doheny placed second in
their boys short board heats while Brian Pearson, Colin McElroy and
Christian Morabito each took third for the Sailors.
Robert Guy and Christopher LoMenzo finished second and third,
respectively, in boys long board while Mahea Hookano took third for
the Tars win the girls long board competition.
Tommy D’Eliscu and Bennet Schlesinger placed second and third,
respectively, in the body board event while Turk and Taylor Simpkins
finished second and third in the girls short board competition.
OCC ends season
* BASKETBALL: A quick first half propelled the Orange Coast
College men’s basketball team to a 59-51 Orange Empire League victory
over visiting Irvine Valley Friday in the regular season finale.
Lance Ortiz scored a game-high 18 points for OCC (15-12, 6-8 in
conference). Ortiz also had four steals and two three-pointers.
Irvine Valley (14-12, 6-8) was led by Darryl Maorris’ 12 points.

Flamson honored
* SOCCER: Orange Coast College women’s soccer player Taryn Flamson
was named to the 2004 National Soccer Coaches Association of
America/Adidas Junior College Division III All-West region team,
selected by the respective coaches of the teams in the region.
The freshman, who was also a first-team All-Orange Empire
Conference selection, guided the Pirates to a13-5-3 record and a
second-round berth in the 2004 Southern California regional playoffs.
The former two-time All-Sea View League selection with Newport
Harbor High registered five goals and eight assists in her first year
with OCC.
