Ocean View now 6-0 in girls’ volleyball

The Ocean View High girls’ volleyball team got out of the gate

quickly in the race for the 2004 Golden West League championship by

winning its first three league matches.

The two most recent triumphs came at the expense of Estancia and

Saddleback.

The Seahawks rode 15 kills by Jeniece Womack and 30 assists by

Hayley Hanson to a 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 win over host Estancia.

Two days later, Ocean View had a tougher time with league rival

Saddleback, but survived the Roadrunners, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21.

The victories puts the Seahawks at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league

play.

In other girls’ volleyball action, Ashley Collier came up with 19

kills and Kari Pestolesi had 18 more as Edison defeated host Mira

Costa, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24.

Huntington came back from a game down to handle Dana Hills, 26-28,

25-17, 25-20, 25-19, in nonleague play.

In girls’ tennis, Huntington opened its Sunset League slate on a

successful note by routing Esperanza, 18-0.

Getting sweeps for the Oilers were singles players Lauren Pascoe,

Jennifer Heumann and Monica Stupaczuk and the doubles teams of Amy

Kaufman and Stacy Kaufman, Elaine Nguyen and Kelly Wong and Jenny Le

and Christina Le.

The Oilers previously had defeated Cerritos, 14-4.

Pascoe swept at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles Kaufman and

Kaufman and No. 2 doubles Wong and Le earned sweeps.

The two wins puts Huntington at 6-0 overall.

Edison won its Sunset League opener by routing Marina, 17-1.

Sophomore Brittany Bass swept by 6-0 scores at No. 1 singles and

No. 2 Vali Bonev and No. 3 Shauna Henderson also swept.

The Chargers also got sweeps at No. 1 doubles from the teams of

Lauren Boyer and Lindy Shields, who won two, and Boyer and Natalie

Moseley, who won once, and No. 2 Melissa Boyer and Carly Spreeman.

The Chargers also were an 11-7 winner over Santa Margarita. Lauren

Boyer and Vi Troung at No. 1 doubles and the No. 2 tandem of Melissa

Boyer and Spreeman swept their Eagles opponents.

In boys’ water polo, Edison defeated Santa Margarita, 7-6, lost to

Mission Viejo, 7-3, and lost to Sunset League foe Huntington Beach,

10-7, in play at the Villa Park Classic.

Travis Bee netted four goals in the win over Santa Margarita.

Bee also matched six goals with six steals in Edison’s 17-14

nonleague loss to host Corona del Mar in a double-overtime thriller.

At the same classic, Marina was defeated by La Habra, 10-8, and

Huntington edged El Dorado, 11-10.

In cross country, Marina’s boys captured first-place at the Sunset

League Preview Meet at Central Park.

Edison’s Joel Gatel won the race in a time of 15:44.

Fountain Valley won the girls’ event.
