The Huntington Beach Dolphins struck quickly and the defense never
let up in a 12-0 victory over the Inglewood Jets in a Jr.
All-American Football Midget Division league game at Huntington Beach
High.
On the Dolphins’ first possession, Zack Couey connected with
Dontaie Ferguson on a quick slant and Ferguson went the distance to
complete a 43-yard scoring play for an early 6-0 lead.
Huntington scored again on its third possession of the game. This
time, an 11-play drive culminated in Jeremiah “Bam Bam” Pemasa’s
plunge into the end zone from one yard out, which gave the Dolphins a
12-0 lead at the half.
The second half was dominated by the defenses, as the Dolphins
picked up its third shutout in four games.
Huntington is now 4-0 this season.
“Sometimes the defense has to pick it up a notch when the offense
is limited, like they were this afternoon,” Dolphins defensive
coordinator Steve Rhoads said after the game.
The Dolphins will be after their fifth straight victory Saturday
when they host the Rowland Heights Raiders in a 3 p.m. kickoff at
Huntington Beach High.
In previous action, the Dolphins spotted the Norwalk/Santa Fe
Springs Saints an early touchdown before storming back with 36
unanswered points for an eventual 36-7 victory.
Down 7-0 midway through the first quarter -- the first time this
season they had trailed -- the Dolphins began their explosion when
Couey found Ferguson with a short pass. Ferguson split two defenders
and raced 72 yards for a touchdown.
Wade Houston ran the ball in for a two-point conversion, giving
Huntington a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
A 34-yard pass from Couey to Dylan Garcia set up another touchdown
as the Dolphins took a 14-7 lead at the half.
Huntington went on to outscore the Saints, 22-0, in the second
half, with 16 of those points set up by a relentless Dolphins
defense.
Pemasa scored when he scooped up an errant lateral pass by the
Saints on a fourth-down play, and rambled 56 yards for a touchdown.
Later in the game, Houston picked off a deflected pass and took it 50
yards down to the Saints one-yard line, where Pemasa would cash in on
a one-yard plunge.

A one-sided win over the Padres kept the Dodgers undefeated in
league play.
The Dodgers’ pitching rotation of Jonathan Combest, Kevin Doran,
Nyko Gonzales, Kevin Mackey and Daniel Zavala combined for 11
strikeouts in recording the shutout. Doran got five of the 11
strikeouts in his three innings of work.
Mackey, who also played at first base, turned away a Los Alamitos
scoring threat in the fourth inning when he made a diving catch of a
hard hit line drive with the bases loaded.
The Dodgers racked up 15 hits in seven innings.
Dan Tierney started the onslaught with a leadoff double and was
followed by Mackey’s RBI single. Zavala doubled home Mackey and drove
in two more runs with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Jacob Springer had two hits, one accounting for an RBI in the
fourth. Matt Deaner also had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
