Steve Rhorer shot an even-par 71 in...

Steve Rhorer shot an even-par 71 in the third and final round to

claim his second Mesa Verde Country Club men’s championship in three

years.

Rhorer (75-74-71 -- 220) finished 7-over for the tournament, two

strokes ahead of Laurent Khaiat (71-74-77 -- 222). Pete Daley

(73-77-76 -- 226), a four-time Mesa Verde men’s club champion, came

in third.

With the win, Rhorer is eligible to compete for Team Mesa Verde in

next summer’s Jones Cup.

12-over, tied for 135th, to lead a trio of local golfers in the

stroke-play portion of the United States Golf Association Mid-Amateur

championship held on the Seaside and Plantation courses at the Sea

Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., Saturday and Sunday.

Mike Carpenter, who won his first Big Canyon Country Club men’s

championship in August, finished 17-over (79-80 -- 159) in the first

two rounds while Mesa Verde Country Club’s Tom McGreevy shot 19-over

(79-82 -- 161).

The top 64 advanced to the match-play portion.

* Cal’s Caddyshack in Costa Mesa will stage “Spooky Golf ‘04,” a

night golf tournament where contestants dress in costumes and play

the Hyatt Newporter Golf Course, on Oct. 30.

Costumes are required. Cost to play is $30.

The night begins with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. followed by

golf at 7:30. Space is limited.
