Newport man dies in Louisiana boat crash
A Newport Beach man died this weekend after a Louisiana airboat
accident.
Daniele Nanna, 31, died Saturday of asphyxia due to drowning,
according to the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office in Louisiana.
Nanna was one of 16 people on an airboat tour of a swamp in Crown
Point, La., just south of New Orleans, said Milton Walker Jr., owner
of Louisiana Swamp Tours.
A second person, San Francisco resident Wan Ju Tsai Woo, 50, also
died in the accident.
The tour had just started Saturday afternoon when the boat flipped
over, he said. The Coast Guard Marine Safety Office is investigating
the accident.
“We’ve never had a boat flip over,” Walker said.
Air boats can travel up to 35 mph, he said. Operators must be
licensed Coast Guard captains and undergo random drug testing, he
added.
Accident victim succumbs to injuries
A Westminster man critically injured in an alcohol-related crash
in Costa Mesa last week died from his injuries early Monday morning.
Tuan Nguyen, 24, died at Western Medical Center at 4:08 a.m.
Monday from head trauma suffered in the accident, supervising deputy
coroner Joseph Luckey said.
Santa Ana resident Oscar Tinoco, 21, who was driving the pickup
truck in which Nguyen was a passenger, now faces vehicular
manslaughter charges, Costa Mesa Police traffic investigator Carlos
Diaz said. Tinoco is free on $100,000 bail on DUI charges in
connection with the accident.
The accident happened just after 2 a.m. on Sept. 28, according to
police. Tinoco’s Nissan pickup struck a light pole at the corner of
Harbor Boulevard and Ford Road, ejecting Nguyen, police said.
A second passenger, 22-year-old Jose Carrion of Santa Ana,
received minor injuries but was not treated.
Speed did not appear to be a factor in the accident, Diaz said.
