‘Eaters capture eighth

The UC Irvine men’s water polo team dropped a pair of games to finish
eighth in the Northern California tournament at the University of the
Pacific in Stockton Sunday.
UCI, ranked No. 5, lost the seventh-place game to No. 7 Loyola
Marymount, 8-6, as the Lions outscored the Anteaters, 3-0, in the
fourth quarter.
Junior Dreason Barry led UCI (8-6) with three goals and Andrew
Dunn added two.
Joe Wynne had eight saves for the Anteaters.

In a consolation semifinal Sunday morning, 10th-ranked UC Santa
Barbara topped UCI, 9-7.
Barry scored three goals to lead the Anteaters and Rick Merlo
added two.
Ross Sinclair, a Newport Harbor High product, led four Gauchos who
scored two goals apiece.
Gauchos blank UCI
* SOCCER: UC Santa Barbara broke a scoreless tie with a penalty
kick in the 57th minute and went on to defeat visiting UC Irvine,
2-0, in a Big West Conference women’s soccer game Sunday.
The two teams played a physical, scoreless first half, before UCSB
forward Randi Jones was fouled in the 18-yard box. Allie Kueny
directed the subsequent penalty kick inside the left post. It was
Kueny’s fourth goal of the season.
Jennifer Borcich knocked in a rebound in the 69th minute to add
insurance for the Gauchos (7-4-1, 2-0-0 in the Big West). It was
Borcich’s eighth goal of the season and upped her career total to 49.
The second-half surge continued a recent trend for UCSB, which has
posted all nine of its goals in its last four matches after halftime.
The Anteaters (3-7-2, 0-2-0) were outshot, 8-3, in the first half
and 18-6 for the game.
Marissa Welliver had seven saves for the Anteaters.
UCSB ‘keeper Jamie Considine had four saves to produce her fourth
shutout of the season, her third in the last four games.
Britney Webster led the Anteaters with two shots, while six
Gauchos had at least that many.
The loss was UCI’s third straight and extended the Anteaters’
winless streak to six.
Former Sea King shines
* SOCCER: Jaclyn Thayer, a 2002 Corona del Mar High graduate,
scored her second game-winning goal this season to help the visiting
New York University women’s soccer team earn a 1-0 victory against
Case Western to open University Athletic Association play Saturday in
Cleveland.
Thayer, a junior forward, controlled a loose ball in front of the
net and netted the goal nearly 26 minutes into the first half.
She ranks second on the Violets (5-4-1) with three goals while
adding an assist.
