Storm captures title

The Storm, a club roller hockey team consisting primarily of Costa
Mesa players, earned its fourth consecutive championship in the
squirt division (12-and-under) at the California Roller Hockey Center
in Irvine.
After finishing the regular season with an 11-4 record, the Storm
won their semifinal game, 8-2, then met Primal Red in the title
contest.
The teams battled to a 4-4 tie after one period.
In the second period, Primal Red was assessed a number of
penalties and the Storm capitalized. The Storm power play unit of
Ryan Iverson, Conner Burns, Blake Kelly and Max McCourt scored on
four of their five opportunities to create an 8-4 victory.
Others who contributed for the champions included Austin Wobrock,
C.J. Piz, Gabe Harris, Tanner Sabako and goalie Drew Hoshide
In National Junior Basketball play:
* Newport Mesa 32, Irvine 22:
The Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball girls fifth-grade team
beat Irvine, 32-22, April 24 for their first win of the season.
Charlotte Gadbois, Allie Moskovits, Ellie Nadal, Riley Peleuses,
Saylor Schroff, Duran Sharp, Kassie Straton and Kelsey Woo all scored
and recorded a steal for Newport.
In Newport Beach girls fastpitch 8-and-under play:
* Pink Panthers 9, Tigers 4:
The Pink Panthers scored nine runs in three innings to beat the
Tigers, 9-4, at Arroyo Park April 24.
Abigail Waring and Carolyn Smith pitched for the Panthers and were
backed up defensively by twins Genevieve and Erica Weed.
Jacqueline Horwitz hit a two-out double for the Panthers and Lily
Chavis, Hannah Bagdasar, Emilie Jajonie and Mereidith Kline all
contributed at the plate.
In AYSO girls under-10 play:
* Deja Blue 3, Green Iguanas 2:
Natasha Daloub and Caroline Strom both scored goals to help Deja
Blue beat the Green Iguanas, 3-2, May 1. Taylor Wolf, Jaria Rosenberg
and Camila Gilbert were strong goal keepers. Sara Machaskie, Annabel
Pidgeon and Jordan Castleton helped with the Deja Blue offense while
Keaton Basster played tight defense.
In sixth-grade roller hockey action:
* Ducks 7, Ranger 3:
Dylan Gravelle had four goals in the game, including two in the
final period, to help the Ducks to a 7-3 win over the Rangers. Travis
Whitlock, Mike Do and Jared Cassidy recorded the other goals for the
Ducks. Goalie Logan Newett was helped defensively by Hannah Toohey
and Daniel Netzer.
