Newport Harbor High senior Michael Bury has been named first-team
All-CIF Southern Section Division I in boys water polo team.
Bury, who led the Sailors with 93 goals, was the lone Newport-Mesa
player to earn first-team honors and one of just three players, all
from Newport Harbor, to be selected for any team.
Sophomore Clay Jorth, who scored 56 goals for the Sailors, was
named to the Division I second team and teammate Griffin Gentry, a
senior, was a third-team selection.
A member of the U.S. youth national team, Bury earned first-team
honors for the second consecutive year after leading Newport Harbor
to a 17-11 finish and an appearance in the Division I quarterfinals.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder was called one of the best two-meter men in
Division I by his coach, Jason Lynch, and is considered a top college
prospect.
Jorth, who joined Bury as a first-team All-Sea View League
selection, is a member of the U.S. national cadet team and was second
to Bury in goals this season.
