Lucky No. 13 for Black Mustangs

Quarterback Michael Taormina rushed for two touchdowns and passed for

two more as the Costa Mesa Pop Warner Jr. Pee Wee football team

completed an undefeated season with a 28-7 victory over the Nanakuli

Hawks -- the Hawaiian state champion -- in the Pineapple Bowl in Las

Vegas, Nev., Saturday.

Taormina hit Parker Norton on a 28-yard touchdown pass to give the

Black Mustangs (13-0) a 14-7 lead in the third quarter. Zack Porteous

caught the other touchdown from Taormina. Graeme Fraser converted

three of four two-point kicks and Buzzy Yokoyama fought through

sickness to make a key interception. Mesa was without its standout

running back, Mark Contreras, and Grant McKee, who each had the flu.

Dakota Gilbert, Tyler Henry and Richie Lowery all contributed to

the victory on a field that was frozen to begin the game, Coach Kirk

Norton said.

“This was the toughest game all year,” Norton said. “We beat them

with team speed. The kids rose to the occasion.”

This is the first time in 33 years a Costa Mesa Pop Warner team

has gone 13-0.

Mesa’s Trujillo triumphs

Brittany Vergara scored 10 points while Cassey Brick tallied eight

to go with six from Bethany Vergara. Heather Cluff (five) Tracy

Bjelland (four), Deanna Sanchez (three) and Judie Akansel (two) all

assists.

Sage wins consolation

* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School sophomore Haywood Wright sank a

three-footer with about 30 seconds left and the Lightning held Buena

Park without a shot on the ensuing possession to claim a 36-35 girls

basketball win Saturday.

Wright’s bucket allowed the Lightning (2-4) to claim the

consolation championship of the Fairmont Small Schools Classic at

Fairmont High.

Wright, an all-tournament selection, had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Sage teammate Katie Puishys chipped in eight points

and 10 boards and Debbie Yoder-Lee added eight points, four steals

and four assists.

Mesa defeats Century

* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team regained its

scoring edge as it tallied six goals in a 6-1 triumph over Century to

finish consolation play in the Ocean View tournament Saturday.

Kristen Paulsen scored twice and was aided by single goals from

Brittney Banning, Jasmin Day, Nilani Duarte and Yareli Ortega. Sara

Bryant, Day, Caitlin Duffy, Sarah Humphries and Cindy Mendoza all had

assists as Mesa (3-4) scored five consecutive goals to break a 1-1

tie.

The Mustangs, who finished the tournament 1-2, outshot Century,

23-3, and took a 4-1 lead into halftime. Mesa goalkeeper Kindra

Bailey had two saves.

“The whole team played well,” Mesa Coach Dan Johnston said.

Mesa took a hit, though, when junior sweeper Rachel Ronquillo left

the game with a sprained ankle in the 11th minute.

Junior Jenny Sparks missed her second consecutive game with an

injured medial collateral ligament. Johnston said the second-team

All-CIF Southern Section Division III selection should be out for two

weeks.

Mesa faces host Corona del Mar at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Lions top Cal State L.A.

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team had

its five starters score in double figures, as the Lions rolled to an

84-76 nonconference victory over visiting Cal State Los Angeles

Saturday at the Pit.

Lisa Faulkner and Kelly Schmidt scored 17 points each, while Lacey

Mills and Linsdsay McClellan added 14 apiece and Lacey Burns produced

10. Mills hit 4 of 6 from behind the three-point line to help the

Lions (6-1) defeat the NCAA Division II school that fell to 1-3.

Vanguard, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, was outrebounded 38-26, but

that hardly mattered, mainly because the Lions shot 53% (17 for 32)

in the first half for a 48-32 lead.

Vanguard played without Coach Russ Davis, who was absent because

of a family emergency, the university reported.
