Tars’ Draganza sizzling

Natalie Draganza shot the low round Wednesday, a 4-over-par 38, to

lead Newport Harbor High’s girls golf team to a 231-234 nonleague

victory over Mission Viejo at Santa Ana Country Club.

Ashley Jacobs shot 44, beating her personal best by five strokes.

Her round included a birdie at the par-3 sixth hole. She stuck her

tee shot three feet from the cup, Newport Coach Scott Tarnow said.

Kayleigh Horn followed with a 45 and Erin Callahan shot 50. Marissa

Zehnder and Katie McKay each shot 54 for Newport (3-0).

On Monday, Draganza shared medalist honors to help the Sailors

defeat nonleague host Dana Hills, 270-277, at Talega Golf Club in San

Clemente.

Draganza shot 10-over-par 45 to match Dana Hills’ Jackie Kazarian.

Kayleigh Horn (53), Marissa Zehnder (53) Erin Callahan (56) and

Katie McKay (63) also scored for the Sailors.

VU blanks Alliant

* SOCCER: Jennifer Zipprich scored two second-half goals to lead

the host Vanguard University women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory

over Alliant International in its home opener Wednesday.

Ashley DeLoach, Heather Tape and Megan Swann all tallied assists

as Vanguard (2-3) scored three goals in a span of six minutes

beginning in the 63rd minute.

Lion goalkeepers Stacy Britton and Kim Becher combined for seven

saves on seven Alliant shots. The Lions fired 21 shots on goal.

Adams rallies as Sailors romp past host Tesoro

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis team improved to 2-0

with a 17-1 nonleague win over host Tesoro Wednesday.

Bonnie Adams, playing No. 2 singles for Newport, was down three

match points in a tiebreaker before winning her final set of the day,

7-6 (10-8), to finish the sweep.

Vanessa Dunlap, Brittany Sturgess and Diana Khoury won all their

singles sets.

Newport’s No. 2 doubles duo of Carly Adams and Carolyn Hustedt,

along with the No. 3 team of Chrissy Schwartz and Sasha Dunlap, won

each of their three sets. A.J. Olson and Megan McKay took two of

three sets.

Pirates sweep SD City

* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College’s women’s volleyball team swept

host San Diego City, 30-21, 30-11, 30-14, in nonconference action

Wednesday.

Freshman Donka Drozd led the Pirates (2-0) with 13 kills while

Marti Merriott and Christine Woller, a Newport Harbor High product,

each finished with nine. Amber McCarthy tallied 34 assists. Woller

led Coast with nine digs while Merriott added eight. McCarthy had a

team-leading three service aces.

Alliant edges Lions

* SOCCER: Alliant International edged Vanguard, 1-0, Wednesday

night in a nonconference men’s soccer match at VU. The Lions fell to

5-3; Alliant improved to 5-1.

Orange Coast College men fall to Palomar

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team fell behind

to Palomar and couldn’t overcome a two-goal deficit, losing, 2-1, in

a nonconference match. Eric Nutter scored the Pirates’ lone goal with

three minutes left. John Gauthier had an assist on the play for OCC

(2-2). Mark Spears made three saves against Palomar (3-1).

OCC women lose to Santiago Canyon

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team could not

rally from a 2-0, first-half deficit and lost, 3-1, to visiting

Santiago Canyon in Orange Empire Conference play Tuesday.

The Pirates scored in the first five minutes of the second half

when Michelle Jacot headed in a rebound that came from Jessica Hull’s

shot that hit the crossbar. Santiago Canyon improved to 5-0-1, 1-0-1

in the OEC. Orange Coast (1-3-0, 1-1-0) hosts perennial power Cypress

Friday at 3 p.m.

UC Irvine finishes fourth at Sunriver

* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team tied for fourth at the

Oregon State/Northwest Invitational held at The Woodlands Golf Course

in Sunriver, Ore., on Tuesday.

UCI sophomore Angela Won finished third after shooting a 224

(77-73-74), while freshman Minnie Choi had a top 20 finish in her

first collegiate appearance, placing 16th with a score of 232

(79-76-77). Junior Shelly Raworth was 42nd with a three-round total

of 240 (79-81-80), while senior Channing Lovejoy fell to 53rd with a

245 (77-77-91). Reana Yun carded a 247 (84-82-81) to finish 57th.

Concordia sweeps Vanguard in GSAC

* VOLLEYBALL: Concordia defeated the host Vanguard women’s

volleyball team in Golden State Athletic Conference action, 30-27,

30-24, and 30-26, Tuesday night.

VU never got closer than five points in the second game despite

Kelli Whittaker’s team-high five kills and Marissa Cothan’s 13

assists.

Whittaker tallied a team-high 10 kills in 17 attempts and Jaclyn

Lee led the Lions with four serving aces. VU fell to 5-3 overall and

0-3 in GSAC, while Concordia improved to 6-4 and 2-1 in conference.

The Lions are on the road Friday against Alliant International.

Orange Coast’s Fernando medalist

* GOLF: Lorraine Fernando earned medalist honors to lead Orange

Coast College to victory over Santa Ana and Santiago Canyon in a

three-way nonconference women’s golf match Monday at River View Golf

Club in Santa Ana.

Ferando shot 12-over-par 82, while Laura Sumpter (88), Joanne

Durocher (90) and Ashlee Kendall (94) also scored for the Pirates.

* BASKETBALL: Registration is now open for the 2003-2004 Winter

Youth Basketball League. All children in grades first through eighth,

residing in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach may participate, may

register. To get information about the league, and to register, you

must go online to: https://www.nmnjbl.org.

There will be a skill evaluation for players on Sept. 28, to

assist in putting the teams together. The practices will begin Nov. 1

and games will begin Dec. 7 continuing until March, with a break for

Christmas. Games are held in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach school

gymnasiums on Sundays throughout the season.

Registration is online only, through September. The fee is $115

for the first/second Clinic division, and $210 for grades third

through eighth. This is the most popular youth basketball league in

the area, and it usually sells out.

Local X Games at South Coast Plaza

* EXHIBITION: The Second Annual Festival of Children offered

something for everyone last weekend as the Vans Extreme Sports Show

took place in the Nordstrom parking lot at South Coast Plaza.
