AYSO Region 97 heats up

The Newport Beach girls under-14 soccer team defeated Costa Mesa,

7-1, in AYSO Region 97 action.

Lauren Alexander and Nikki Liddicote each scored two goals and

Desiree Alexander, Kara Foster and Katie Puccio added single tallies

for the victors. Haley Willard, Alyssa Lee and Laura Catron each made

strong defensive plays.

In boys under-12 action:

* Red Devils 6, Black Jacks 0

Daniel Netzer, Wil Curiel, Casey Bushong and Trevor Noon anchored

the offense while midfielders Stephen Denghausen, Kyle Evans and

Matthew Hurst added support.

Defenders Luke Dawson, J.D. Vickers, Matthew Di Francesco and Ryan

Andrews fought against the Devils’ offense.

Casey Bushong and Kyle Evans both saw action in goal for the Black

Jacks.

In girls under-12 play:

* Blue Attitude 3, Breakers 0

MacKenna Zorn led the Blue Attitude with two goals and Kathryn

Zimmermann added one in the shutout.

Sarah Buckingham passed to Zorn, who drove the length of the field

and made a centering pass to Zimmermann for a 1-0 lead.

Strong midfield play by Kaitlin Kehoe and Caitlin Tona stopped

Breakers’ attacks. Brianna Truxton and Nichole Vento controlled the

center of the field.

In girls under-10 play:

* Rattlers 3, Quicksilver 0

Megan Farley scored two goals with an assist from Olivia Ilkcagla.

Ricki Archie scored the final goal on a pass from Sara Vetrovec.

Kasey Thompson, Jordyn Alessia, Victoria Meer and Mary Ahearn

played strong defense.

* Breakers 3, Jaguars 1

Christina Young scored two goals and Meaghan Kay added a score to

pace the Breakers in their season opener.

Alison Hayes fed Kay for the first-half goal.

Alyson Delbrook passed to Young for a goal at the start of the

third quarter. A throw-in by Robin Young led to Christina Young’s

second goal.

Casey Duckworth, Page Keys, Sydney Groves, Katie Calder,

Alexandria Chandler and Samantha Small demonstrated solid passing and

defense throughout the game.

* Fireballs 3, Gatorade Wave 1

Molly Anderson’s hat trick paved the way for the Fireballs’

victory.

Rachel Vensand, Kirsten Rohan and Ailani Hause provided the

assists.

Midfielders Gianna “Gigi” Light, Morgan Long, Kate Batstone and

Christina Dupont moved the ball into scoring position.

Elyssa Barnett and Chelsea Taylor led the defense and Sofia

Muscatello led with three saves while Christine “Tiny” Jacques made

two stops in goal.

In boys under-10 play:

* Silver Wolves 5, Tornados 1

Robert Boullon and Caleb Candelaria each scored two goals to lead

the Silver Wolves.

Candelaria scored his in the first quarter while Boullon found the

net twice in the fourth to seal the victory.

Efe Atli scored a goal in the third quarter before the Tornados

answered with one in the fourth.

Jacob Swain anchored the defense while in goal as Jason Wooding,

Clay Smyth and Cameron Candelaria also helped hold the Tornados

scoreless in the first half.

Smyth, Eli Gomez and Wyatt Muller handled the midfield.

Smyth, Atli, Boullon, Casey Shearer and Cody Lippman alternated at

forward. Atli and Candelaria shared goalkeeping duties in the second

half.

* A.C. Milan of Newport Beach won its opener, 6-1.

Landon Gyulay and Ian Baugh led the scoring with two goals apiece

and Sam Sykes and Max Johnson added single goals to cap the scoring.

Nick McCann spearheaded a stingy defense along with Charlie Pena,

True Tamplin and Christian Franco. Ryan Cerrato made several saves in

goal.

Midfielders Willie Pyle, Jesse Torres and Kyle Regan all played

well.

The team is named after the Italian professional team.

In girls under-8 play:

* Emily Conant, Cortlynn Clement, Berkley Van Oostendorp, Reo

Nathan, Carolyn Hernandez and Analysa Vivanco all scored goals in the

first three quarters for the Girls on Fire against the Purple Team.

Goalkeeper Allana Courier held off the opposition in the fourth

quarter.

* Rosalie Deliz, Emily Cook and Samantha Singer all scored goals

for the Firing Flames in the season opener.

Singer, Kailen Locke, Jessica Arnold and Cook all saw time in goal

and Hailey Oberst, McKenna Johnson and Julia Frei added assists.

In boys under-8 play:

* A swarming defense and attacking offense characterized the Green

Goblins in their season opener against the Flame Throwers.

Marc Gehlke opened the scoring for the Goblins, drilling a

long-range shot in the first half, but Chas Beek, Andrew Dimas and

Joey Gregory kept the offensive pressure going in the second half.

Will Crook and Cole Chapin teamed on a second-half drive that

resulted in a Goblins’ goal.

Eli Botros made three diving stops for the Goblins during the

fourth quarter.

In girls under-7 play:

* MacKenzie Gaddis, Mallory Gyulay and Kate Yasko scored goals for

the Blue Hula Girls in their game against the Shooting Stars.

Brittney Welsh and strong defensive play from Kappy Fuller, Gabby

Shelley and Kierstyn Yardley kept the Shooting Stars at-bay.

* The Firecrackers edged the Surfer Girls, 3-2, in the season

opener. Libby Knight, Riley Alexander, and Miranda Hart scored the

three Firecracker goals while Reagan Rutter, Bryn Crowell and Amanda

Brown played strong defense.

Kira Wandrocke and Sierra Page kept the Surfer Girls off balance.

* Delanie Gastineau scored two goals and stopped one shot as

goalkeeper for the Fireflies.

Emily Wolfe also put the ball into the net and Brooke Netzer,

Baylee Kneip, Annie La Grandeur, Erin Wilson, Alex Vasquez and Nicole

Carlin all hustled at both ends.

In boys under-7 action:

* The Blue Dolphins opened their season strongly, scoring five

first-half goals against the Sharks.

Mathew Brodie scored three with Cooper Hendrix and Chase Braun

adding single tallies. Maxwell Peterson, Ethan Buggelin and Phoenix

Smith helped move the ball into the Sharks’ zone.

The Sharks came back in the second half, but the Dolphins

continued the pressure. Sam Launder broke away from the defense and

missed a goal by inches.

* Will Hinkleman and Erick Pineda scored goals for the Blue Flames

against the Green Goblins.

John Drayton fired shots on goal as Grant Fuchs, Jack Heald,

Elliott Frye, Peter Goodman and Jimmy Preston played staunch defense.

* Quinn McKay scored twice for the Fireballs against the Shredders

and Ben Bockrath added a goal in the opener.

* Landon Knight initiated an aggressive game for the Tigers with

an opening breakaway assisted by teammates Griffith Clawson and Jack

Binford. Baron Davis and Thomas Quinn made strong passes and led

scoring drives.

Midfielders Wills Johnson and David Hartman exhibited ball control

and solid defense against the Piranha. Ryan Braun converted a corner

kick for the Tigers.

In girls under-6 action:

* Emily Goltz scored for the Fireflies against the Dragonflies.

Laura Mackenzie and Charlotte Monke both dribbled the length of

the field, narrowly missing scoring opportunities.

Erika Ellis and Candace Callahan helped move the ball through the

midfield while Heather Roberts and Quincy Morgan helped on defense.

In boys under-6 play:

* Both the Sharks and the Red Hot Chili Peppers had several shots

on goal.

Hunter Ficenec, Shane Mitchell and Dillon Murphy kept the ball

moving for the Sharks while goals were made possible by the passing

of Corbin Joyce, Kyle Moran and Ryan Young.

The Chili Peppers’ Reed Rutter scored a goal late in the fourth

quarter on assists from Wilson Lubeck and Sam Skinner.

Jack Cornuke, Trevor Neighbors, Jack McKasson and Peter Harano

made some strong defensive plays for the Chili Peppers.

* The Blue Whales received multiple goals from Jerome Higman with

assists by Joey Moddelmog and Jack Kearl. Marc Vukcevich, along with

Cody Wildman and Ben Hammond, led the defense and T.J. Morton all

made strong passes.

* The Green Giants played the Green Fire in a competitive match.

Cole Kinder, Trent Burgess and Mathew LeGrandeur all had

breakaways into the open field.

Christian Coufos, Carlton Chang and Charlie Muller all made

defensive stops and strong passes.

* The Silver Sharks showed strong offensive and defensive skills

against the Men in Black.

Chase Adelsohn played strong defense despite injuries suffered

during practice while Alex Escalera and Alex Michaelsen both had key

assists.

Charlie Wiggs and Hunter Holden had the furthest kicks and Baer

Lanfried and Collin Pipkin booted several shots on goal.
