Laguna freshmen tops tourney play

For the third time this summer, the incoming freshman boys’

basketball team at Laguna Beach High has won a tournament title.

This time out, it captured the Tesoro Freshman Basketball

Tournament played at Tesoro High in Las Flores.

The 12 schools competing in the tournament included host Tesoro

which had two teams compete, Laguna Beach, Dana Hills, Santa Ana

Valley, El Toro, Capistrano Valley Christian, Capistrano Valley,

Northwood, Aliso Niguel, Marina, Santiago and San Clemente.

The Breakers played four games overall, posting a 4-0 record.

Tournament scores were not available.

Laguna began play by defeating both El Toro and Capistrano Valley

Christian in pool play.

In semifinal action, Laguna downed Tesoro’s No. 2 team to advance

to the finals.

In the tournament title game, the Breakers beat Tesoro’s No. 1

freshman team, 46-36.

Laguna’s incoming freshman team won each of the three summer

tournaments it entered. The Breakers first took the El Dorado

Tournament title and last week won the El Toro Tournament.

Laguna also defeated Tesoro twice during the El Toro Tournament.

Laguna ended its summer season with a 19-2 record.

The Breakers’ incoming freshman team consists of Ian Butters,

Bobby Monroe, Nathan Pickett, Brian Delino, E.J. Gomez, Patrick

Curran, Brennan Healy, Ty Fleming and Chris Hyden.

Cheyne Martin also played on the incoming freshman squad during

the early portion of the summer season but was moved up to play on

Laguna’s junior varsity team following the El Dorado Tournament.

He was the top scorer at the junior varsity level, then was

brought up to play at the varsity level.
