VFW wins pair; moves into first

VFW overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring five runs over a stretch of the
fourth and fifth innings and went on to post a 5-1 victory over the
Firefighters in Majors Division play at Laguna Beach Little League.
The victory solidified VFW’s standing as the No. 1 team in the
division standings.
VFW was 11-3 overall heading into this weekend’s action.
Gabe Stansbury allowed the Firefighters just one hit and an
unearned run at and recorded nine strikeouts at Riddle Field.
VFW drew even at 1-1 in the fourth inning when Casey Miller’s hit
brought home Will Armstrong.
VFW came up with a four-run fifth to take command.
Alex Shusko doubled -- his second of the game -- and Stansbury
drew an intentional walk and both scored on Mikey Rubel’s double for
a 3-1 lead.
Cooper Gwaltney singled and later scored on Armstrong’s double.
In other games:
VFW 12, Laguna Surf & Sport 7
A five-run first inning sent VFW off and running against a
determined Laguna Surf and Sport team.
Will Armstrong tripled and singled in going two for two with his
triple scoring three runs in the opening inning.
Armstrong also scored three times.
Alex Shusko had two hits including a two-out, two-RBI double after
Laguna Surf & Sport had narrowed the gap to 6-4. Mikey Rubel laid
down a bunt single to score Shusko for his second RBI of the contest.
Logan Schoembs had a hit and RBI, Casey Miller had two RBIs, Gabe
Stansbury had an RBI and Wyatt Innins had a hit, walked and scored
twice.
For Laguna Surf & Sport, Nikko Okamoto-Coen had two hits and
scored twice, Caine Fair homered and singled and Shane Snyder singled
and had four RBIs.
VFW’s pitching trio of Shusko, Drake Dixon and Miller allowed six
hits and struck out 12.
American Legion 7, Rotary 1
American Legion’s pitching duo of Travis Woloson and Tyler MacRae
split the six innings and struck out 10 while allowing five hits.
They were backed by a solid defense that was error-free.
Kyle Snyder singled twice, Beau Hutson doubled and Woloson, Kelsey
Linton and Spike Jackson each had hits.
Rafael Vickers’ two hits paced a Rotary offense that included
singles by Michael Maxsenti, John Palfryman and Scott Ferguson.
Firefighters 5, Sportsworld 0
Daniel Selevan struck out eight in a complete-game victory for the
Firefighters.
Spencer Freidenrich delivered a two-RBI double highlighted a
second inning that included single by Selevan, Brennen Mulvaney, Matt
Boesche, Ian Greene, Andrew Shapero and Brian Ross.
Selevan doubled in the fourth and scored on Boesche’s single.
Rotary 7, Laguna Surf & Sport 2
Roy Herbert tripled and singled and Jack Monroe doubled among two
hits to pace Rotary on offense.
Monroe, Herbert and Will Bonsey each scored two runs.
Bonsey and Mike Maxsenti combined on a six-hitter.
Shane Snyder went three for three and Zack Riegler, Keanyn
Skinfill and Robbie McKnight had the other three hits for Rotary.
Rotary 2, Hobie 1
Jack Monroe scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth
inning as Rotary knocked Hobie out of first place.
Earlier, Monroe had scored on John Palfreyman’s sacrifice bunt in
the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie.
Hobie’s run came during the top of the sixth when Zackary Johnston
scored on a passed ball.
Roy Herbert singled and doubled and Will Bonsey and Brett
Linkletter each doubled for Rotary.
Bonsey threw three innings of scoreless ball with five strikeouts.
Bonsey, Palfreyman and Maxsenti held Hobie to just one hit.
Firefighters 12, Hobie Sports 0
In a game called after four innings due to the mercy rule, the
Fire Fighters rolled past Hobie.
The Firefighters did it, too, on just six hits.
Brian Ross’ triple was the big hit of the game. Ian Greene doubled
and Daniel Seleven, Brennen Mulvaney and Luke Lacy all singled.
Mulvaney and Seleven each took a turn on the mound and faced just
13 batters. The pair combined to allow just one hit without a walk.
Matt Moisen had the lone Hobie hit.

Legion, 4-9; 6T. Laguna Surf & Sport and Hobie, 3-9.
