Newport Harbor High freshman Robert Khoury rallied to upset
top-seeded Shimpei Suzuki of Woodbridge, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1, in the
singles title match Thursday in the Sea View League individual boys
tennis championships at Laguna Hills.
In the second set, Khoury went up, 5-2, but Suzuki came back to
tie it, 5-5. In the tiebreaker, Khoury took a quick 5-0 edge, before
Suzuki pulled to within a point.
Khoury became the first Newport Harbor player to win a league
singles title since Geoff Abrams in 1994, when the former Stanford
All-American defeated Sailor teammate Jeff Thomsen, the current
Newport Harbor coach.
As a team, the Sailors will play Irvine today at Laguna Hills at
3:15 p.m. in a showdown to decide the league’s third-place playoff
team.
