Snyder, Van’t Hof reach Ojai tournament semifinals

* TENNIS: On his 19th birthday, Corona del Mar High senior Garrett
Snyder won twice to advance to today’s semifinals of the boys singles
CIF division at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament.
Snyder, who is seeded 10th, defeated Servite’s Jonathan Sanchez,
6-4, 6-1, in the Round of 16, rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the first set. He then beat El Camino Real’s Bruce Aiken, 6-3, 6-1, in
the quarterfinals Friday.
The University of Texas-bound Snyder will face top-seeded Jeff Das
today at 8 a.m.
Kaes Van’t Hof, a Newport Beach resident who attends Mater Dei,
also advanced to the semifinals of the boys CIF singles division with
a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Arcadia’s Mark Contreras, then defeated
Santa Margarita’s Matthew Ozurovich, 7-6 (4), 6-1, in the
quarterfinals. He will face Torrey Pines’ Eric Riley today at 8 a.m.
The final will be at 2 p.m. today.
In boys 14s singles, top-seeded Jake Fleming of Newport Beach
advanced to the semifinals with two wins, beating Moorpark’s Drew
Jacobs, 6-4, 6-3 and San Gabriel’s Andre Felix, 6-1, 6-0, in the
quarters. Newport’s Fabian Matthews will be Fleming’s opponent today
at 8 a.m. Matthews beat Cerritos’ Abhinavr Venugopal, 6-4, 6-3, and
Arroyo Grande’s Andre Dome, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarters.
Costa Mesa’s Nelly Radeva will play in the semifinals of the girls
14s singles today at 8 a.m. against Indio’s Pamela Montez after
beating Westlake Village’s Blair Brzeski, 6-1, 6-0, in the Round of
16 and an 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) decision against Irena Katzarkov in the
quarters.
Orange Coast College’s men’s doubles team of Mike Fulminante and
Spencer Solomon lost in the third round while Robert Chu lost in
singles . Fulminante and Solomon beat a team from Long Beach, 6-3,
6-0, to reach the third round while Chu beat Fresno’s Giovanni
Rodriguez, 6-3, 7-5, in the Round of 32.
On the women’s side, OCC’s Leah Becker defeated Jessica Sliger of
American River, 6-2, 6-0, in the Round of 32 before falling , in the
Round of 16.
Ashley Nelson and Leah Becker reached the Round of 16 with a 6-7,
7-5, 6-1 win over El Camino’s Nicole Arias and Joy Fleming, but lost
in the Round of 16 .
Orange Coast sweeps
* TRACK AND FIELD: Orange Coast College’s men’s and women’s track
and field teams each placed first at the Orange Empire Conference
championships Friday at Santa Ana .
Roseann Peters doubled in the 800 meters (2:17.50) and 1,500 (4:41.40), while Michelle Icban ran to first in the 5,000 (18:11.16).
Hanni Geider in the 400 hurdles (1:07.28) and Natalie St. Andre in
the 3,000 steeplechase (12:08.87) also placed first. Keinan Briggs
doubled for the Coast men in the triple jump (49-feet, 6 1/4inches)
and 110 hurdles (14.71). Gilbert Salas won the 3,000 steeplechase
(9:48.31), while Art Diaz in the 5,000 (15:40.11) and Anthony Daniels
in the 400 (48.80) crossed first for Coast in the finals.
OCC’s Tsai breaks mark
* SWIMMING: The Orange Coast College women continued to dominate
Friday in the second day of the three-day Orange Empire Conference
championships at Saddleback College, where the Pirates, with 502
points, are in first place ahead of runner-up Riverside (355).
OCC’s Sherry Tsai set an OEC record in the 200-yard individual
medley (2:05.04) and started the Pirates’ winning 200 medley relay
(1:53.09), which also included Nikki Stephens, Jennifer Nelson and
Ashley Lowden. OCC also won the 800 freestyle relay (8:04.41) with
Sara Natalizio, Lowden, Erica Nicholson and Kimberlee Frith. Nelson
and Frith also won individual titles in the 50 butterfly (26.82) and
200 free (1:55.40), respectively, while teammate Stephanie Wood
captured the 50 breaststroke (32.55).
The OCC men (393 points) are in a close race with Palomar (401)
for the team title, while Grossmont is in third with 383. Billy Jolly
and Matt Henry were individual winners for OCC in the 100 backstroke
(55.21) and 400 IM (4:20.98), respectively, while the Pirates’ 200
medley relay (1:40.17) finished first with Tyson Magnham, Roger Wong,
Billy Swanson and Paul Frankenberger.
‘Eaters blow lead
* BASEBALL: Cal State Northridge (10-34, 4-6 in the Big West
Conference) didn’t score until the seventh inning, then rallied for
three runs in the eighth to defeat host UC Irvine, 4-3, in a Big West
three-game series opener Friday night at Anteater Ballpark. The
‘Eaters fell to 16-26, 4-6.
UCI starter Brett Smith lasted 6 1/3 innings, giving up five hits
and no earned runs.

* VOLLEYBALL: Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team advanced
to the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions
following two victories Friday.
CdM defeated Santa Ynez, 15-6, 9-15, 15-5, 11-15, 15-8, in a quarterfinal match, getting 21 kills, eight blocks and five aces from
senior Eric Jones. The Sea Kings (13-8) knocked off Ventura in
first-round action Friday, 15-5, 15-9,. 8-15, 15-5. The Sea Kings
play today at 11 a.m. against top-seeded Buchanan [Fresno].
Newport Harbor defeated Laguna Beach, 15-6, 11-15, 15-7, 15-13, in
the first round Friday.
Jamie Diefenbach led the way for Newport with 26 kills . Newport
(13-10 lost in a quarterfinal against third-seeded Bullard [Fresno],
15-5, 15-7, 15-9.
VU posts two wins
* SOFTBALL: Vanguard posted nonconference wins of 5-2 and 1-0 on
its home field Friday over visiting Notre Dame de Namur. Shortstop
Lisa Jackson delivered the big blow in Vanguard’s 5-2 victory in the
first game with a two-run triple.

Eagles ease past Lions
* GOLF: Senior Jason Cassidy led a steady Estancia High boys golf
team past Golden West League foe Westminster, 203-220, Thursday at
Meadowlark Golf Course.
Cassidy shot 3-over-par 35, while freshmen Greg Les and Marcus
Sostak each contributed with a 40. Senior Ryan Brown had a 42 and
junior Jason Les came in at 43 to help Estancia improve to 11-3, 6-0
in league.
Woodbridge downs Tars
* SOFTBALL: Host Woodbridge High got its bats going Thursday and
Newport Harbor couldn’t counter the onslaught. The Warriors defeated
the Tars, 9-2, in a Sea View League softball game.
