Shadowlands

Looking back, 5 years ago this week:

Newport Harbor High’s hard-throwing right-hander Scott Beerer fans

11 in 5 1/3 innings to help preserve a 12-7 victory over Costa Mesa

in the Pride of the Coast Tournament. Beerer also doubles twice

against Mesa, his second two-bagger following a leadoff walk to Nick

Langsdorf, to jump start a five-run outburst in the 11th inning.

Scott Crane and Charlie Waite each plate runs with a double for

Newport (5-10) while Langsdorf and Shawn O’Donnell each smack two-run

home runs. Two Harbor errors lead to three unearned Mesa runs in the

fifth inning as Josh Little socks a three-run home run to tie the

score with one out in the sixth inning. Jimmy Herzog leads the

Mustangs’ 12-hit attack, going 4 for 6 with a double and reaches base

in all six of his plate appearances.

Corona del Mar High’s baseball team extends its winning streak to

four games and pushes its record above .500 for the first time in a

month with a 9-4 Pride of the Coast Tournament pool-play victory over

Laguna Beach. The Sea Kings remain unbeaten in tournament play, but

the date for a later game has yet to be determined because of rain.

CdM (8-7) seizes the early lead with a six-run first inning, keyed by

Matt Larson’s two-run double inside the left-field line. Larson

scatters five hits through five scoreless innings with five

strikeouts. Brian Phillips gets the final two outs of the sixth

inning on two pitches and works a perfect seventh to preserve

Larson’s victory.

Denise Woodard captures her third consecutive club championship at

Mesa Verde Country Club to earn another appearance in the Tea Cup

Classic. Woodard becomes the first lady to win three straight titles

at Mesa Verde since Shirley Kinder, who won championships from 1983

to 1985. Woodard fires her best round of the tournament (84) to

finish with an 11-stroke victory. The Tea Cup Classic is part of the

Fletcher Jones Motorcars/Daily Pilot Club Championship Series, which

determines an overall women’s club champion in this newspaper’s

circulation area. Woodard makes one birdie, on the par-3 No. 3 (148

yards) She uses a 9-wood to get within four feet of the flag, then

makes the putt. Woodard shoots 86, 88, 86, 84 (344) to finish ahead

of Marj Hull (365), Martha Redfearn (362), Izumi Sueoka (364) and

Natalie King (365), who has won six club titles at Mesa Verde.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

The Newport Harbor High Sailors gain their first Sea View League

baseball win at the hands of Back Bay rival Corona del Mar High, 9-8.

The Tars mix little ball with timely hitting and strong relief

pitching from sophomore Mike Buist to hold off the Sea Kings. Leadoff

man Tommy Urbina opens the game with a double off CdM starter Kevin

Stuart and Justin Ketcham doubles him home two batters later to give

the Sailors a lead they would not relinquish. Dave Snowden opens the

second with another double and is later squeezed home by center

fielder Chris Parker. The Tars rip five straight two-out singles to

make it, 6-0, after Parker’s squeeze. Urbina, who goes 3 for 4 with

two runs and two RBIs, begins by beating out a bunt and Scott

Sanderson, Ketcham, Mike Freeman and Ryan Anderson follow with hits.

Jeff Matsen and Dave Angeloni each tally two hits for the Sea Kings,

who rally for five runs in the second inning before the Tars add a

single run in the third and two more in the fifth to forge enough of

a cushion.

The Orange Coast College club hockey team, toiling in virtual

obscurity, brings home a state championship trophy. Coast, a member

of the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association -- a Division II league

-- is a heavy underdog going into the title matchup with San Diego

State (12-1-1 entering the playoffs), but sends the finale to a 3-3

tie at the end of regulation. OCC, the only community college team in

the league and made up of both students and alumni, wins on penalty

shots. Center Greg Holly tallies on OCC’s third try in the extra

session but SDSU ties it on its third chance. Then Mike Ivan scores

and Coast goaltender Derek Walker stops the last two shots to

preserve the victory. Brad Friedman scores the third goal for Coast

(7-5-2 at the end of the regular season) to send the game to

overtime. OCC powers through Pepperdine, St. Mary’s and USC to reach

the six-team tournament’s final.
