Stung by an 11-9 loss in the opener of a doubleheader with host Azusa
Pacific in Golden State Athletic Conference baseball, the Vanguard
Lions bounced back with a 9-3 victory to salvage a split Saturday.
Jason Searle went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored in
the opener, and Joe Carnahan was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs
scored. Scott Martin was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and scored a run.
Searle and Martin each slugged three-run homers to stake Vanguard
to an 8-0 lead after two innings before the roof caved in.
The nightcap was another story, however, as All-GSAC pitcher
Marcus Harris baffled the Cougars for 7 innings to lead the Lions to
the 9-3 win.
Searle, with two home runs in the opener, was 3 for 4 with two
RBIs and two runs scored.
Millward was 2 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and scored twice;
Martin was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and scored twice; Bower was
2 for 3 with a double; and Carnahan was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
With the split, Vanguard is 12-9, 6-4 in the GSAC. Azusa Pacific
is 8-9, 5-5.
